This report documents the examination for oil in the vicinity of Quanah, Hardeman County Texas during the fall of 1914.

Some idealized considerations of the temperature field in the homogeneous pile are given. It is crudely estimated that the effective mean temperature rise of the pile to be used in calculating the k loss is something like 3/4 the rise in temperature of the slurry in passing through the pile.

When a slug has been displaced from its normal position the thickness of the water film is decreased over part of the surface, and higher temperatures may be expected where the film is thin. The experimental data necessary for an exact calculation is incomplete, but some approximate estimates ae made here with special assumption concerning the heat transfer coefficient h as a function of the angle p from the point where the water film is thinnest. Variation in water bulk temperature around the annulus due to poor mixing is not considered here.

The solubility constants are presented for He , Kr , Xe , O2 , N2 , and air in H20 . Inter-diffusion constants for gases and the diffusion of gases in water are given.

Abstract: "The possibility of detecting small quantities of uranium with an X-ray spectrometer was investigated. An X-ray spectrograph was modified by substituting a geiger counter for the photographic film. Both primary and secondary methods of excitation were studied. Radiation background of high intensity and variability limits the sensitivity of the present apparatus to 1%. Suggestions are made for increasing the sensitivity of the method."

Abstract: "The half-life of polonium has been measured by a calorimetric method using samples several thousand times larger than have been previously available. The value is found to be 138.3 +/- 0.1% days."

This report presents the results obtained from gust and draft velocity measurements within thunderstorms for the period August 7, 1946 to August, 13, 1946 at Orlando Florida. In several of the surveys, indications of ambient air temperature were obtained from photo-observer records. These data are summarized in the report.

Abstract: "Hexavalent uranium in weakly acid solution produces with a large excess of ascorbic acid a yellow-brown color whose intensity under certain conditions is a linear function of uranium concentration. Chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, along with Fe, Cd, Mn, Na, Ca, Sn, Mg and Th are without effect on the color while phosphate, sulfate, fluoride, citrate, tartrate, oxalate, chromium, and vanadium and moderate amounts of Ni, Zn, Mo and Al interfere. A rapid ether extraction procedure for purification of the uranium has been developed."

The following report describes the electron spectrum of protactinium derived from 23 minute thorium 233 that was produced by neutron capture in stable thorium.

"A program of creep-rupture tests of several bars of Beryllium has been completed. The tests were made at 1200, 1400, 1550, and 1700 F. in protective atmospheres of tank helium or hydrogen. The results are given in a summary table and by creep and design curves. A description of the test set-up is included."

This report has two parts to it discussing mineralogical examination of pitchblende concentrates and nitric acid digest residues. Part I gives the results of a cursory examination with the petrographic microscope of samples of pitchblende concentrates and residues to see if there is a relationship between the mineral composition of the samples and the filterability of the residue. Part II gives a revaluation of the data in Report BMI-241 on the mineral composition of two residues from the nitric acid digestion of pitchblende concentrates at the Rallinckrodt Chemical Works.

Uranium ore from Radium Hill, South Australia was leached with hot sulfuric acid solutions and the uranium recovered from solution by uranous phosphate precipitation or by use of anion exchange resins.

The geometry of the magnetic pole structure in the cloverleaf cyclotron suggests the use of three dees excited by three phase rf placed in the valleys out of the way of the beam. Experience with the model machines indicates that it is desirable to be able to vary the phase angles between the three dee voltages through 30 or 40 degrees and to be able to maintain them at any given value within plus or minus one degree. It is desirable, also, to be able to vary the phase angle independently of the amplitude of the dee voltages. There are several possible ways of meeting these requirements. The one which was chosen appears to be the most flexible and to best meet the problems presented by the center geometry of the machine.
