[John Fletcher Watts]

John Fletcher Watts was born in Sumter County, S.C. on March 22, 1836. He was a son of Hampton and Lenna Sarah Brown Watts and married Martha E. Burton on March 18, 1861. She was born in Mississippi on August 7, 1845 and died in Texas on June 22, 1923. John enlisted for service in the War of Secession at Palestine on April 11, 1863. He was reported sick or wounded on February 1, 1864 and was listed on the Prisoner of War roll at New Orleans on May 26, 1865. He served as Mayor of Palestine in 1885 and served until 1886 and was a Master Mason. He died on April 28, 1924 in Palestine.

J.J. Word, son of Col T.J. Word, a congressman from Mississippi, was a lawyer, and was considered a lovable character around town. He was born on April 20, 1843 and married C.A. Sterne’s daughter, Katherine. He was elected Mayor of Palestine in 1889 and served until 1891. He passed away on October 19, 1909 and is buried in the Old section of the Palestine City Cemetery.
