Bees

Bees are a most important factor in the pollination of soil conservation legumes. This is a very economical way, according to K.C. Bennet, to get more and better returns from legumes in a planned soil and moisture program. Bees feed on vetch, sweet clover, peach and other blossoms on the Webb farm. Webb sold around $500.00 worth of honey last year.

Wolf Eradication

Photograph of a rack of 24 wolves and coyotes killed by plane and dogs. Shot and wounded from a airplane and caught on the ground by dogs. These wolves and coyotes are eliminated because of the damage they do to chickens and calves. They also rob the nests of ground birds of eggs and young birds. The eradication of the wolves and coyotes in this photo is being done by the Welch, Okla. wolf hunters Association.

Guar

Photograph of Guar being grown on soil unit 12 where it had been very difficlut to secure a stand of any crop. Guar is grown as a soil improving crop. Cooperators rotation on this land is guar and cotton. Farmer estimates cotton yeilds have increased 30% since he has been using Guar in his rotation.

Aerial Spraying

Extensive Growth of Vetch

Photograph of left to right, Henery Heman, District cooperator, WUC, SCS K.C. Bennett, and Bart Brewster, neighbor. Brewster is shown admiring the extensive growth of vetch on the Heman farm, while Heman proudly looks on. The vetch is a common occurance now in Ottawa County with approxomately 60,000 acres grown annually. The vetch was practically not known before the beginning of the district in 1946.

Wheat and Clover Rotation

Wheat is fertilized with 125 pounds of 5-20-20 and 100 pounds of 0-20-0 per acre. Groeneman is a firm believer in the value of sweet clover as a soil builder.

Strawberries

Photograph of typical sample of strawberry land. This land is mostly rock and gravel. It will grow strawberries for 3 to 6 years before it should be put into bermudagrass and clovers to conserve the soil from further depletion from erosion and leaching. Strawberries can be grown onthos land again in about 20 years.

Strawberries

Photograph of a packing shed where strawberries are taken by the pickers. The pickers are paid as they bring the berries to the shed. The berries are packed in crates and are prepared to be shipped to market or the freezing plant. Berries are picked and handled quickly to conserve loss from spoilage.

Land Leveling

Photograph of a float for leveling land which will be used for irrigating farming. This float is 12 feet wide and 30 feet long and is constucted with 3x12 inch lumber.
