Erosion Control on Cultivated Field

Photograph of erosion control measures on a cultivated field. This field was formerly farmed with straight down hill rows and the soil suffered badly from silting. Terraces and grassed channels have been constructed and contour cultivation is now practiced. A volunteer crop of wheat serves as winter cover and supplemental pasture for livestock.

North Cavalary Creek Overflow

Photograph of Cavalary Creek overflowing. This is inbetween the Frank Kliewer and Elmer Flaming farms, 7 miles SE of Cordell, Okla. Overflow enters North Cavalry Creek after running down the road less tha 1/2 mile from where it leaves South Cavalry Creek. (See the Okla-10-783 and Okla-10-782 series). Flood waters are washing out the road and endangering the bridge. This picture is looking south.

Cover Crops

Photograph of Lee Brown, operator, is plowing under mature cover of rye after it has been grazed about 5 months by livestock. Knie uses this field, approximately 100 acres of Class I, II, and III land, exclusively for grazing. He says the cattle gained about 2 lbs. per day and this utilization of the land produces considerable more than harvest crops by machine.

Contour Farming

Waterway produced 400 bales of hay on most recent cutting. Javarsky says with hydraulic equipment very few problems are encountered in plowing the land.
