Alpha-Decay Studies in the Heavy Element Region

Thesis describing a research conducted to extend observations on nuclear energy levels and how they effect the nucleus itself, and an investigation on the gamma rays associated for the even-even isotopes and to obtain additional data for the oddmass neclei in the hope that more regularities will become apparent for that class of nuclides.

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family (open access)

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family

Abstract: "With magnetic alpha-particle and electron high-resolution spectrographs and scintillation gamma-ray spectrometers, a study was made of the nuclear decay of a number of members of the actinium family - U-235, Th-227, Ra-223, Em-219, Po-215, and Bi-211. Decay schemes are presented for each of these nuclides, together with such correlations as are possible with present theoretical nuclear models. The decay scheme of U-235 and a portion of that of Th-227 are interpretable in terms of the collective model and a spherical shell-model characteristics; however, the intermediate nuclides present complexities not well understood."

An Enhanced Magnetic Mirror Machine (open access)

An Enhanced Magnetic Mirror Machine

Abstract: "A dc magnetic mirror machine has been built and tested by the ARC Research Group. Radiofrequency enhancement has been included in the design through the use of rf plates in the vacuum chamber of the machine. For the proton beams of the order of 1[mu]a, the mirror action has been observed as a function of both the rf voltage and the magnitude of the mirror field relative to the main magnetic field. Current measurements were performed with the aid of a Faraday cup with suitable bias grids."

Electron-Population Analysis and the Dipole Moment of the LiH ¹Σ⁺ Excited State / A.M. Karo (open access)

Electron-Population Analysis and the Dipole Moment of the LiH ¹Σ⁺ Excited State / A.M. Karo

Abstract: "Detailed consideration is given to some properties of the first excited electronic state. Following the analysis proposed bv Mulliken, SCF LCAO-MO coefficients are used to obtain qualitative information about the electron distributions. Comparison is made with earlier work with respect to the description of the excited-state dipole moment, the effective electric moment between the ground and excited states is also calculated. From this, the oscillator strength for the first allowed transition is computed as a function of the internuclear distance."

Laboratory Production of Fine Grain Nuclear Emulsion

Abstract: "Nuclear emulsion has been made in a manner similar to that of Demers and of Perfilov. An attempt has been made to achieve the grain size and sensitivity of Perflov's type P-9 Sensitive emulsion. Silver bromide grain sizes of essentially the same average size as Perfilov's were made from precipitations carried out over a narrow range of pAg's. Three brands of gelatin were tried. High sensitivity has not been achieved."

Project Cowboy : Physical Properties of Salt Samples

The purpose of Project Cowboy was to investigate the seismic signals generated by chemical explosions in underground cavities, with particular emphasis on the possibility of decoupling of these signals from the surrounding media. The project site was the Carey Salt Company salt mine, located approximately five miles west of Winnfield, Louisiana. The tests were run during fiscal year 1960. This report presents the results of tests performed on specimens from the samples of salt taken in the area.

A Study of Heat and Mass Transfer to Uninsulated Liquid Oxygen Containers (open access)

A Study of Heat and Mass Transfer to Uninsulated Liquid Oxygen Containers

The wide use of liquid oxygen as an oxidant in rocket engines has resulted in an increased interest in low-temperature heat transfer. Storage tanks for this type of application, being uninsulated, contain a boiling-liquid low-temperature sink, which is susceptible to environmental heat inputs and subsequent liquid loss by vaporization. Such losses are difficult to predict due to the complex combination of ambient conditions which exist, and the lack of knowledge concerning their combined effects. Heat transfer in this field is difficult to analyze primarily because of its transient nature. This is a result of such factors as: (1) the growth of an insulating frost layer on the outer surface of the container, with its accompanying energy transfer to the system; (2) the temperature dependent convective air pattern that surrounds the container, (3) the transfer of radiant energy to the system, and (4) the mechanical failure of the frost itself with subsequent sloughing from the container wall. A lack of knowledge regarding the coefficient of diffusion of water vapor through air and the thermal conductivity of frost in this depressed temperature range further complicates the predictions of heat transfer.

Single Particle Excitation Theory Of The Photonuclear Giant Resonance (open access)

Single Particle Excitation Theory Of The Photonuclear Giant Resonance

Calculations of the photonuclear giant resonance according to the Wilkinson model are presented in this report. In this model the giant resonance in the cross section for absorption of gamma rays by nuclei is ascribed to the excitation of large numbers of nucleons in closed shells. The model generally predicts correctly the integrated cross section for the giant resonance, bu the resonance energy is too low. Results are presented in a series of tables and formulas so that the integrated cross section may be calculated for any given nucleus.
