Remains of Old Sod House
Photograph of the remains of an old sod house built by early settlers of Northwestern Oklahoma. The houses were built of blocks cut from the good grass sod they found in this area. Some of the walls are still standing and are in fair condition after nearly 100 years. This type of sod no longer exists. It has been destroyed by plowing for farming, over-grazing and erosion.

Photograph of Washita River channel cutting 2 miles northwest of Pauls Valley, Okla. It has been estimated that 2500 acres of valuable Washita River bottom land has fallen in the river channel due to severe cutting during the past 20 years.

Photograph of Washita watershed, damage to front slope of Site 26 Wildhorse Creek Watershed. Dam runs almost due east and west. Part of slope was rip-rapped with rock from spillway but rock lacked about 6 feet being high enough to prevent this damage. SCS plans to repair this damage.

Photograph of some excellent specimens of bluestem. Sand bluestem on the left and little bluestem on right. Note sand Lovegrass adjacent. Pasture was grazed all during 1955 but not heavily. Good vigor of grass in 1956 at watering place. Bluestem plants six years old.

Closed Terraces
Photograph of channel type terraces constructed in 1951. These are closed terraces. Note the water held by the terraces on the morning after 2 inch rain and hail storm with a small tornado. This field has been placed in the Acreage Reserve program. This land will be summer fallowed and will be drilled to wheat for the fall of 1958.

Pine showed considerable damage. 50% to 75% of needles showed damage and 50% to 75% if all new growth showed characteristic twist from 244 5 T. All of undesirable undergrowth show damage.

Proper Land Use
Photograph of productive soil maintained and improved on a 2% slope by use of conservation practices. Land is terraced and contour farmed and crops are rotated. Soil improving crops are used regularly. The crop of oats, now on the land show lodging because of excessive rainfall as did practically 100% of all small grain in the district in 1957. Oats were 5 feet high and promised a good yield when the rains started. Soil Unit 6CP.
