Conservation Rotation Hay & Pasture with Cattle Grazing in Pasture

Photograph of a herd of 112 cattle grazing on a pasture consisting of Blackwell switchgrass and sweetclover planted on 75 acres of land. The back of the photograph proclaims, “Conservation Rotation Hay & Pasture. Blackwell Switchgrass. Mr. Brown planted a mixture of 3 lbs. Blackwell Switchgrass and 2 lbs. Sweet clover March 1957 on 75 acres of Class III land. On Mar. 1 he started grazing 80 head of steers in this field and grazed until May 20. Returned the 80 head to graze July 15 to Oct. 25 or total of 182 days total gain 28, 500 lbs. This shows same field July 2, 1959 with 96 big cattle and 16 calves have been grazing since June 1. Brown plans to graze until Aug. 1 then rest to get good regrowth and will return [the] Oct. 1 until sold.”

Pasture Management-Weed Control

Spray Rig consists of PTO Pump, tractor, barrels and boom costing approximately $250.00 being used to control weeds, native, and tame pasture. This practice highly recommended by the Soil conservation Service technicians, to reduce competition and increase stand of grasses. Native grass infested with ragweed's being sprayed with 2,4,D at rate of 1 lb. in 17 gallons of water per acre. Cost $1.20 per acre for material, labor and machinery – using tractor PTO Pump and Boom type sprayer."

Bonnie Tice Harvesting Weeping Lovegrass

The back of the photograph proclaims, "Bonnie Tice harvesting weeping lovegrass on a 90 acre planting. This planting is 2 years old and was fertilized in 1958 followed by being pastured most of that summer. In addition to being pastured, 2 cuttings of hay was removed which produced approximately 50 bales per core. Fertilizer was applied in 1959 at the rate of 50 lbs. of nitrogen per acre. The 1959 seed harvest was 10,400 lbs. of seed from the 90 acres. Since the seed harvest, a hay crop has been removed and approximately 69 head of cattle are being pastured."

Long Branch Project Site No. 11 Major Spillway

Photograph of a 17-inch pipe on the backside of Site No. 11 Long Breach Watershed Project discharging water from 14 days of periotic rainfall. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Pipe on backside of Site No. 11 Long Breach Watershed Project discharge under from the 17" pipe. From July 13 to 26, 16" of rain fell on this watershed and the water went around the emergency spillway on July 15 following 11" of the rain in 44 hours for about a 3 hour period. Everything worked perfectly and no damage to the bermudagrass cover in the waterway. About 100 to 150' of native grass above the permanent pool contour was damaged by standing water during the rain period."

After 5 years the strips are plowed up and other strips are seeded to control wind erosion."
