Timber Stand Improvement

Photograph of Elmer Binns girdling large cull oak tree to release a crop of young pines. This is cheaper, quicker and a better method than planting pine seedlings. Planting pine seedlings in this mountain area is difficult and expensive. This hill land has been badly cut over the past and Mr. Binns is trying to encourage pine trees through adapted conservation forestry measures. OK-335-9.

Photograph of a follow-up of a roadside drop-inlet flood control structure adjoining the Sid Lundy farm. The structure was built where formerly a dangerous wooden bridge spanned a gully on a school bus and mail route. County Commissioners furnished the pipe and the Soil Conservation District put in a fill through the Soil Conservation Service Flood Control program. The permanent basin is full of water. OK-9600-D.

Posts are brought into this yard to be peeled, graded and prepared for shipment. Charles P. Burke, Oklahoma Woodland Conservationist, is checking a stack of graded posts. Photograph of a large gully near Ionine Creek site 3. The trees in the background obscure the gully. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Large gully, Sec. 17, T9N, R8W. The main gully has moved upstream at the rate of 70 feet per year for the past 18 years. It has a depth of 73 feet and a width of 270 feet at the head. Gully is 90 feet deep at deepest point. This gully system produced sediment at the rate of 72 acre-feet per year for the period 1937 to 1955."
