From introduction: The "Granite" exploration hole was core drilled to determine the character of the igneous rocks from the surface to a depth of 1,200 feet and the degree of structural anisotropism of the rock within 200 feet of a point 950 feet below the surface. This report summarizes the data on the structure, chemistry, petrology and alteration of the rocks exposed at the surface in the immediate vicinity of the drill site and in the core.

Interim Report on the Radioactive Carbonate-Hematite Veins Near Salmon Bay, Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska (open access)

Interim Report on the Radioactive Carbonate-Hematite Veins Near Salmon Bay, Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska

From abstract: In the vicinity of Salmon Bay near the northeastern end of Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska, samples obtained in 1951 from narrow, steeply dipping, carbonate-hematite veins contain as much as ,O.07 percent equivalent uranium. The average grade of these veins cannot be reliably stated because no systematic sampling has been done. No uranium or thorium minerals have been identified. Several chemical analyses indicate only a few thousandths percent uranium. Most of the radioactivity is apparently caused by thorium, which seems to be in or closely associated with red hematite.

Revision of the Documentation for a Model for Calculating Effects of Liquid Waste Disposal in Deep Saline Aquifers (open access)

Revision of the Documentation for a Model for Calculating Effects of Liquid Waste Disposal in Deep Saline Aquifers

Abstract: Details of additions and modifications to a computer code described in an earlier report entitled "A model for calculating effects of liquid waste disposal in deep saline aquifers,: USGS WRI 76-61, NTIS-PB256 903/AS are documented. These additions and modifications include free water surface, vertical recharge, equilibrium controlled linear absorption and a first order irreversible rate reaction. These, plus additional modifications, make this model more adaptable to general hydrologic problems and those involving waste disposal with simple chemical reactions.

Ground Water in the Northeast Part of Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, Bagdad Area, California (open access)

Ground Water in the Northeast Part of Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, Bagdad Area, California

Purpose and scope: The U.S. Marine Corps conducts training maneuvers in the study area. Lack of a local source of water has severely limited the utilization of the area. In the past, limited quantities of water have been transported to the area by truck or helicopter. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of obtaining a supply of ground water in the area for use when field maneuvers are being conducted. The major effort for this study was concentrated on the part within the Marine Corps base boundary. The study involved the assessment of ground-water quality, ground water in storage, and aquifer characteristics.

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks (open access)

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks

Abstract: "A procedure for the determination of thorium in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10 parts per million ThO2 in felsic or mafic rocks. Thorium is extracted by mesityl oxide and purified by iodate precipitation from nitric acid medium containing tartaric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The thorium is determined spectrophotometrically with thoron from meso-tartaric acid medium."

Preliminary Report on Uranium-Bearing Pliocene (?) Rocks in the Split Rock Area, Central Wyoming (open access)

Preliminary Report on Uranium-Bearing Pliocene (?) Rocks in the Split Rock Area, Central Wyoming

From abstract: A sequence of slightly radioactive Pliocene(?) rocks in the Split Rock area of central Wyoming is at least 600 feet thick, underlies an area of more than 25 square miles, and consists of alternating beds of tuffaceous shale, sandstone, and pumicite. Only a small part of the section has been examined. In addition to the uranium content of the strata, there has been secondary concentration of uranium in brecciated limestone similar to spring deposits that could be of Pliocene or Pleistocene age.
