This booklet is the sixth chapter of a training course developed for Air Force Reserve personnel about the challenges posed by the Cold War. This chapter discusses the Philippine government and includes background information, analysis, review questions, and a list of readings for further study.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Walter Gallagher. Gallagher joined the Navy after quitting high school and trained in aviation ordnance. In May, 1944 he was assigned to USS Franklin (CV-13) where he would arm dive bombers. Gallagher describes an injury he sustained while loading bombs as well as various enemy attacks on the Franklin, including a kamikaze. He was aboard when the Japanese bombed the Franklin in March, 1945. Gallagher recalls the attack and was ordered to transfer to USS Santa Fe (CL-60). From there, Gallagher spent six months at Hawaii before going back to the US.

Baer, Jr., an executive at the Caltex Petroleum Corporation from Illinois, discussing his World War II experiences, training at Texaco, work with Caltex in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, the establishment of Caltex East, and his appointment as managing director in Tanzania.

Interview with tax consultant Harcourt G. Bull, Army veteran and survivor of the siege of Corregidor. The interview includes Bull's personal experiences as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese during World War II. Bull talks about the Fall of Corregidor and his capture, the Bilibid Prison in 1942, Tanagawa and Zentsuji, Honshu, and liberation. The interview includes an appendix with a notebook and a narrative written by Bull.

Interview with Jonathan Burns, an Army veteran (200th Coast Artillery, New Mexico National Guard) and a survivor of the Bataan Death March, concerning his experiences as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese during World War II. Burns discusses the fall of Bataan and his capture, the Bataan Death March, Camp O'Donnell (1942), Cabanatuan (1942-1944), Bilibid Prison, Manila (1944), the hell ship to Japan (1944), Moji (1944-1945), A-bomb damage at Nagasaki, and his liberation.

Interview with Jonathan Burns, a veteran of the New Mexico National Guard from Hereford, Texas. Burns discusses his recollections as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese during World War II and the conditions he experienced during the Bataan Death March.

Interview with Joe B. Gear regarding his experiences in the military and as a prisoner of war of the Japanese during World War II. He was captured near Corregidor in the Phillipines.

Interview with Hayes H. Bolitho, a businessman and an Army Air Corps veteran, concerning his experiences as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese during World War II. Bolitho discusses the bombing of Clark Field (1941), his surrender at Clark Field, prison camp at Malaybalay (1942), Davao Penal Colony (1942-1944), the torpedoing of his hell ship and rescue by Filipino guerrillas, and his evacuation by the American submarine USS Narwhal.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Abel Ortega. Ortega was drafted into the Army in March, 1941 and was in the Philippines by November. Ortega was with a tank battalion on Luzon and recalls the retreat to and subsequent surrender on Bataan. Ortega also recalls how his Christian faith served him, and others around him, during captivity. He describes his experiences on the Bataan Death March. Ortega remained in the Philippines for over two years before being shipped to Japan to perform more slave labor. After the war, Ortega was repatriated and describes his return home to his parents.
