The following report is based off of one of the author's lectures on the physics of plasma, or ionized gases, which was given on July 16, 1954.

Abstract: A study of irradiated and normal Teflon by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared analysis, gas evolution, and visual examination is presented and discussed.

This report presents data on the absorption of tritium oxide vapor through human skin.

The following report records the study of the optimum pH of the method of the colorimetric dimethylglyoxime for nickel before the addition of oxidant and the concentration of ammonium persulfate needed to insure complete oxidation to higher nickel valence states and thus prevent precipitation of less soluble nickelous salt that was made. Results of this study is presented in Table 1.

A new model High Range Beta-Gamma Survey Instrument, refer to blueprint numbers H-4-2760 and H-4-2761, was designed which utilizes a circuit similar to that of the older model but incorporates three ranges of 0-5 R/hr, 0-50 R/hr, and 0-500 R/hr.

Calculations of the photonuclear giant resonance according to the Wilkinson model are presented in this report. In this model the giant resonance in the cross section for absorption of gamma rays by nuclei is ascribed to the excitation of large numbers of nucleons in closed shells. The model generally predicts correctly the integrated cross section for the giant resonance, bu the resonance energy is too low. Results are presented in a series of tables and formulas so that the integrated cross section may be calculated for any given nucleus.

Two water quality control labs are being provided for the the NPR. One, a "cold" lab, is located in the183 Building adjacent to the control room. Its primary purpose is to provide facilities for quality control of the output of the filter plant and the demineralizer plant. The other, a "hot" lab, is located in the 190 Building. Its primary purpose is to provide facilities for the quality control of the primary and secondary coolants, and the moderator coolant.

Uranium extraction of 95% has been obtained from samples of Temple Mountain ore by a cyclic test procedure in which the new feed was not roasted. This procedure involved acid leaching the ore, flotation and roasting of the carbonaceous material, and acid leaching the roaster calcine.

Leach liquors produced from Utex ore by cold leaching, hot leaching and pugging proved amenable to the ion exchange process. In addition, a resin-in-pulp system was operated using the Lucite Winchester sells on Utex pulp produced by cold leaching.

This report summarizes the test work done to evaluate the column ion exchange process for extraction or uranium from Grants acid leach liquors.
