A Method for Monochromatizating and Precise Point Focusing of X-Rays and its Application in Low Angle Diffraction Studies

A principle for bending crystals with a minimum of strain so that they will focus x-rays and gamma-rays accurately to a point is explained. Detailed calculations are made of the aberrations in the foci resulting from various applications of the principle. the application of the principle in making a point focusing monochromator for low angle x-ray diffraction studies is discussed, and theoretical and experimental determinations of the reflection coefficient of the crystal are compared. A few experiments in low angle diffraction from biological materials using the new monochromator are described, and the results are compared with those obtained using other instruments.

Homogenous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report For Period Ending January 31, 1955

The reactor equipment cell is expected to be completed by February 15. While filled with water, the tank was inspected for leaks, and the few leaks found will have been repaired by February 15. All orders for construction materials placed prior to this quarter have been received. New requisitions issued during the quarter total $16,000. Work orders were issued, and fabrication of all low-pressure-system components was begun in the ORNL shops. The thermal shield around the reactor vessel was specified as a 2-ft-thick cylindrical concrete wall. With this shield, the fast-neutron flux in the equipment area will be reduced to 7 x 109 neutrons/cm2/sec, the slow flux to 4 x 107 neutrons/cm2/sec, and the gamma intensity to less than 105 r/hr. The possible blast effects from a rupture of the pressure vessel were studied and are judged to be sufficient to justify the inclusion of a 1.5. to 2-in.-thick blast shield around the pressure vessel. The blast shield eliminates the danger of damaging the leak tight equipment-cell liner. Pressures in the reactor equipment cell, as a result of vessel failure, were calculated in order to arrive at a safe design pressure for the reactor equipment cell. For the case of …

Carbon Steel Program for High Temperature Reactor Systems

The Reactor Design and Development Unit has just completed a design concept for an intermediate capacity dual purpose reactor plant utilizing carbon steel for the primary loop portion outside the reactor. This design concept is reported in HW-33157 AD (2). The economic and engineering gains are of sufficient magnitude to justify an accelerated and extensive test program to completely evaluate the remaining unknowns in utilizing carbon steel as a stainless steel substitute. It is the purpose of this document to up-date and elaborate the information contained in the two previous documents (1). . It is the further purpose to define the program required to implement the design concept developed by the Reactor Design and Development Unit (2) utilizing carbon steel as the primary loop structural material.

An Electrical Technique for Ground Water Velocity Measurement

An electrical conductivity technique was developed to determine the dilution-displacement rate of an electrolyte in a well from which data the velocity of the water through the well can be calculated. The electrical current flow between two of the electrodes in a well drops proportionately with the dilution and the displacement of the electrolyte by fresh water entering the well. The drop of electrical current flow over a period of time was applied to a derived equation to obtain a value for ground water velocity. The technique gives results comparable to other methods and some problems of the standard methods of measuring ground water velocity are eliminated. However, a correction factor for porosity of the aquifier must be used in the derived equation. Porosity values are not adequately known in most cases, therefore the ground water velocity figures are generally relative rather than absolute.

Metallurgical Examination of Resistance Thermometer Elements - Rear Face 100-K and Prototype Units 100-H Areas

A metallurgical examination of several resistance thermometers for 105-KW were examined before startup (1). This examination revealed that the silver brazes joining the type 305 stainless steel blades to the type 416 stainless steel nuts were defective. The braze metal did not penetrate into the joint; the brazes were porous and appeared to be inadequately bonded to the type 416 nuts. After startup of KW, many of the thermometers became inoperative, and several were visually examined to determine the integrity of the units. The presence of corrosion products at the junction of the braze and the nut led to further metallurgical examination of the brazed joints. Twenty units from 105-KW, 12 prototype units from 105-H, and two "new model" units were included in this examination. The examination was conducted to determine the cause and nature of the failures observed on units under service conditions.

Radiometallurgical Hardness and Weight Results on Irradiated Zirconium and Zircaloy-2 Samples as Requested by the Pile Development Unit

Eight zirconium and eight Zircaloy-2 process tube samples were irradiated in the "H" test loop, Tube 0961-H, so that the corrosion tendencies of the material might be evaluated when exposed to radiation. The samples were delivered to the Radio-metallurgy Building in January, 1955, and examined as requested by C. D. Wilson of the Pile Development Unit, Pile Technology Section.

Exponential Pile Measurements with Hollow Slugs in Graphite-Uranium Lattice

Buckling measurements were taken with hollow natural uranium slugs in graphite-moderated lattices, in which the lattice spacing was varied from 6 3/16 to 15 inches in five steps. A 1.66" O.D. slug was used with two different core sizes, 1.11" I.D. and 0.81" I.D. The results of wet (water in the core) and dry measurements are reported. Buckling curves are given showing the effect on the buckling of coring the slug and placing water in the core. Simple three-region diffusion theory is applied to the measured lattices in an effort to correlate measurement with theory, but with only limited success.

An Evaluation of Buried Waste Line Design Practice Interim Report No. 2: Underground Pipeline and Structure Corrosion Study Program

This report has been prepared to review the status of design for buried waste line and presents the major factors involved in support of the conclusions. This report is the second in a series reporting on the general subject of underground corrosion. The first on cathodic protection of waste lines noted the technology of stainless steel and its effect on existing waste line and recommended continued use of the cathodic protection. Experience with buried stainless pipe had shown that, unless protected, such installations are subject to severe pit corrosion. As designs developed the use of encasements has become a standardized approach. This discussion will evaluate this trend.

As part of an investigation of solvent stability, a direct analysis of recycled Uranium Recovery Plant solvent* has been made to determine the type, source, and properties of the impurities which have been generated in the solvent and are present in the solvent after it has been in use for some time. This work has been directed towards the separation and identification of the impurities by compound class, and the conclusions are set forth in this report. Another purpose of this report is to present the separation scheme employed, which will likely find similar application.
