That is almost $98,500,000 more than the payroll for the base's first full year of operation chalked up in 1943 when the United States was involved in a full-scale war. Actually the base was activated in 1942 but payrolls could not be figured on an annual basis until 1943. Jump Likely Payroll, including military and civilian, at the end of 1961, totaled $126 million in round figures but with the anticipated addition of 592 employees within the year, the figure will fast jump to the $128 million mark, officials say. This represnts the money that approximately 19,399 people spend. Many of them - at least 11,000 - live in Oklahoma City. Another 2,616 live in Midwest City while Shawnee people commute in numbers totaling 908.
