[Letter from Charlotte Mexia to Emily de Zavala, April 22, 1837]

Letter from Charlotte Mexia to Emily de Zavala, widow of Lorenzo de Zavala, dated April 22, 1837 from New Orleans. The letter refers to her sadness after her son Henry and many friends have left the city. Mrs. Zavala, with her three children and a servant, traveled from Texas to New Orleans on the schooner Flash, arriving March 20, 1837. She and Mrs. Mexia had been friends in Mexico in 1832. Mrs. Zavala and her children left New Orleans for New York on April 9, 1837, thirteen days before Mrs. Mexia wrote this letter to her. The letter also references Lorenzo de Zavala Jr., the son of Lorenzo de Zavala and stepson of Mrs. Emily de Zavala. Lorenzo, Jr. arrived in New Orleans from Texas on April 10, and sometime after April 22 left New Orleans for New York. Charlotte Mexia was married to Jose Antonio Mexia.

This is a letter from the Charles B. Moore Collection. It is written by Birdie McGee and is addressed to Linnet Moore. In this letter, McGee informs Moore of the goings-on in Gallatin, Tennessee. The news includes: a confirmation of the receipt of Linnet's photograph, updates on family and friends, news about her past plans and future plans, agricultural and weather updates,details on community events and the attire that her and some of the family are going to wear to one of the events, a discussion about her hat, and a dialogue about the construction of the school house and the instructor. She closes this letter by noting that Linnet should write soon. In the letter to Charles B. Moore and Aunt Mollie, McGee details the number of baby chickens that have hatched, the number of turkey eggs Tobe has brought to them , and an update on Tobe's campaign in an unspecified election.
