Characterization of Fly Ash From Coal Combustion (open access)

Characterization of Fly Ash From Coal Combustion

Fly ash derived from coal combustion contains predominantly spherical particles which consist of an insoluble aluminosilicate glass containing several mineral impurities. An outer layer, 50 to 300 A thick, is rich in many potentially toxic trace elements in the form of simple and complex sulfates. This layer, which is soluble in water, contains essentially all of the particulate sulfur present in fly ash in the form of sulfate. The actual mechanism(s) of formation of particulate sulfate salts are ill-defined but probably involve adsorption of condensation of gaseous sulfur species onto fly ash surfaces within the power plant stack system.

Design of a Groundwater Sampling Network for Minnesota (open access)

Design of a Groundwater Sampling Network for Minnesota

From introduction: This folio was compiled to facilitate the use of groundwater as a sampling medium to aid in exploration for hitherto undiscovered deposits of uranium in the subsurface rocks of Minnesota. The report consists of the following sheets of the hydrogeologic map of Minnesota: 1) map of bedrock hydrogeology, 2) generalized cross sections of the hydrogeologic map of Minnesota, showing both Quaternary deposits and bedrock, 3) map of waterwells that penetrate Precambrian rocks in Minnesota. A list of these wells, showing locations, names of owners, type of Precambrian aquifers penetrated, lithologic material of the aquifers, and well depths is provided in the appendix to this report.

Energy programs. Quarterly report, January-March 1978

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is engaged in the development of energy resources, energy utilization concepts, and energy storage methods. This Quarterly Report, summarizing work completed on the various tasks as of 31 March 1978, contains comments on limited tasks, short descriptions of meetings, trips, presentations, and other limited tasks of note performed in connection with major program tasks and articles that describe these program tasks briefly, summarize the progress made to date, and indicate future efforts to be made. The major tasks fall into the following categories: Geothermal Energy Development Planning, which concentrates on the survey of potential geothermal resources and the development of scenarios for possible exploitation and utilization in DOE/DGE Region 5, which includes all the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, excluding Texas and Louisiana; Applications Study of DOE/DGE Region 5, which concerns a study of geothermal energy applications in DOE-selected areas of the Atlantic Coastal Plain; the Low-Head Hydroelectric Program; the Community Annual Storage Energy System (CASES) and the status of a development and demonstration plan for a low-cost flywheel; and multiple-objective modeling of power plant locations.

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico (open access)

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico

Abstract: The Jemez Mountains volcanic region, on the west margin of the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico, is the site of studies whose objective is power development using geothermal heat. This report summarizes geohydrologic data obtained to provide background information relative to the geothermal exploration and to investigate the usefulness of hydrology in assessment of the geothermal resource. Eleven tables present chemical, temperature, discharge, and other data for springs, wells, and streams. Accompanying figures show locations of the data points and present temperature profiles and geophysical logs for selected wells.

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey (open access)

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey

Abstract: Chemical and microbiological data from four characteristically acidic streams in southern New Jersey were used to evaluate seven factors related to the proclivity of each stream to nitrify under the influence of secondary sewage effluent. pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen were used as indicators of a stream conditions while neutralization of alkalinity, nitrogen species trends, BOD/NOD incubations, and nitrifying bacteria densities served as actual nitrification indicators. Hay Stack Brook showed strong evidence for nitrification on the basis of all four nitrification indicators while Landing Creek was nitrifying little if at all. Hammonton Creek is apparently nitrifying, but because of uncertainty in the downstream trends of the nitrogen species, and a lower level of alkalinity neutralization, it is nitrifying less than Hay Stack Brook. Squankum Branch showed some evidence for nitrification on the basis of the BOD/NOD incubations. The acidic character of these streams does not appear to be an exclusive factor in determining whether the stream will undergo nitrification.
