Hydrologic Effects of Annually Diverting 131,000 Acre-Feet of Water from Dillon Reservoir, Central Colorado (open access)

Hydrologic Effects of Annually Diverting 131,000 Acre-Feet of Water from Dillon Reservoir, Central Colorado

From abstract: because of the increased demands for water in eastern Colorado, principally in the urbanizing Denver metropolitan area, increased diversions of water from Dillon Reservoir are planned. Estimates of end-of-month storage in Dillon Reservoir, assuming the reservoir was in place and 131,000 acre-feet of water were diverted from the reservoir each year, were reconstructed by mass balance for the 1931-77 water years. Based on the analysis, the annual maximum end-of-month drawdown below the elevation at full storage would have been 171 feet.

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico (open access)

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico

Abstract: The Jemez Mountains volcanic region, on the west margin of the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico, is the site of studies whose objective is power development using geothermal heat. This report summarizes geohydrologic data obtained to provide background information relative to the geothermal exploration and to investigate the usefulness of hydrology in assessment of the geothermal resource. Eleven tables present chemical, temperature, discharge, and other data for springs, wells, and streams. Accompanying figures show locations of the data points and present temperature profiles and geophysical logs for selected wells.

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey (open access)

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey

Abstract: Chemical and microbiological data from four characteristically acidic streams in southern New Jersey were used to evaluate seven factors related to the proclivity of each stream to nitrify under the influence of secondary sewage effluent. pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen were used as indicators of a stream conditions while neutralization of alkalinity, nitrogen species trends, BOD/NOD incubations, and nitrifying bacteria densities served as actual nitrification indicators. Hay Stack Brook showed strong evidence for nitrification on the basis of all four nitrification indicators while Landing Creek was nitrifying little if at all. Hammonton Creek is apparently nitrifying, but because of uncertainty in the downstream trends of the nitrogen species, and a lower level of alkalinity neutralization, it is nitrifying less than Hay Stack Brook. Squankum Branch showed some evidence for nitrification on the basis of the BOD/NOD incubations. The acidic character of these streams does not appear to be an exclusive factor in determining whether the stream will undergo nitrification.

Preliminary Digital Model of Ground-Water Flow in the Madison Group, Powder River Basin and Adjacent Areas, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska (open access)

Preliminary Digital Model of Ground-Water Flow in the Madison Group, Powder River Basin and Adjacent Areas, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska

Abstract: A digital simulation model was used to analyze regional ground-water flow in the Madison Group aquifer in the Powder River Basin and adjacent areas. Most recharge to the aquifer originates in or near the outcrop areas of the Madison in the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills , and most discharge occurs through springs and wells. Results from the model calculations indicate that the total flow through the aquifer in the modeled areas was approximately 200 cubic feet per second (5.7 cubic metres per second). The aquifer can probably sustain increased ground-water withdrawals probably would significantly lower the potentiometric surface in the Madison aquifer in a large part of the basin. The digital model could better predict the effects of withdrawals if more accurate estimates of the storage coefficient, transmissivity, and leakance could be obtained.

Effects of Urbanization on Floods in the Dallas, Texas Metropolitan Area (open access)

Effects of Urbanization on Floods in the Dallas, Texas Metropolitan Area

From abstract: The analyses indicate that in a fully-developed residential area, the flood peaks with be 1.2 to 1.4 times those from an undeveloped area; and the annual direct runoff will be about double that from an undeveloped area. Data were not sufficient to determine the increase in runoff from a highly industrialized area where the effective imperviousness approaches 100 percent.

Salt-Water Movement in the Lower Withlacoochee-Cross-Florida Barge Canal Complex

The intent of the investigation was to determine how salt water from the Gulf moves in the river-canal complex under the influence of various combinations of fresh-water discharge and ocean tide. Information about the extent of inland movement, concentration, frequency of occurrence, and residence times of salt water in the river and canal was sought, particularly during times of farthest upstream movement of the salt water.
