Experiments are described which show that the velocity of compressional waves along a thin plate varies as a function of the frequency of the waves. In terms of transit times in aluminum the value is between 4.02 and 4.94 microseconds per inch.

The Approximation with Anisotropic Effects for Cylindrical Geometry

The method of spherical harmonic tensors developed Mark for solving the Boltzmann transport equation in isotropic media is herein extended to anisotropic media for cylindrical geometry. A formal solution is given for the case of two concentric cylindrical media, A and B, but no numerical work has yet been done. The following treatment differs from a similar one by the H. K. Ferguson Co. in that the external medium B is assumed to be both a neutron absorber and finite in extent rather than a non-absorber and infinite in extent.

Abstract: "Thorium tubes were cold drawn from extruded tube stock and also from drilled hot-rolled rod. Total reductions up to approximately 85 per cent were accomplished by conventional tube-drawing methods, without an intermediate anneal. The hard-drawn tubes had high tensile strength, but the ductility, as indicated by flaring and flattening tests, was low."

Progress Report on Nonaqueous Extractive Methods for Western Uranium Ores

Abstract: "Dissolution of carnotite in several readily liquefiable gases, including ammonia, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, and nitrogen dioxide, was found to be negligible, even in the presence of uranium complexing agents. No low-boiling liquids have been found which will dissolve carnotite directly. Treatment with various sulfur chloride will convert carnotite to a form soluble in water or in certain organic solvents. Also, carnotite can be readily dissolved in HCl-acidified ethanol, methanol, or acetone. Amenability tests on nine western ores with HCl-methanol solvent indicated that uranium extractions greater than 90 per cent could be obtained if sufficient acid was used to insure some free acidity in the pregnant liquor. Temple Mountain and Sinbad-Muddy River ores were exceptions to this, uranium extractions being only about 50-60 per cent. Vanadium extractions were invariably lower than uranium extractions. Chemical analyses are presented for nine western ores."

Calculation of Transport Cross-Sections of Uranium

In recent months, experiments investigating the total, non-elastic, transport, etc., cross-sections of U-238 have been performed. It is the purpose of this memo to examine these data and to obtain from them information which will be of use in refinements pile calculations. In cases, e.g. transport cross-sections, where experimental data do not suffice, the theory developed pertaining to the continuum model of the nucleus has been depended upon. One of the fundamental requirements of this model is that the spacings of the energy levels in the compound nucleus are small compared to their widths and that consequently many levels are excited by the incoming particles. As a result there are many more modes of decay and the continuum model is an average over these levels.

Abstract: "The protection of thorium in hot water was studied. Copper electrocladding on thorium offers promising protection against hot water. The corrosion of thorium in 95 C water was reduced appreciably by a thorium phosphate film. The results of this abbreviated investigation offer a basis for the development of a method of protecting thorium at elevated temperatures in corrosive media."

Total Neutron Yield From Targets Bombarded by Deuterons and Protons

The total number of neutrons emitted from various targets bombarded by high energy deuterons and protons was measured by using a solution of MnSO<sub>4 to thermalize and capture the neutrons. The methods of monitoring the number of particles striking the target and of calibrating the neutron detecxting apparatus are discussed in detail. Deuterons of energies to 230 Mev and protons of energies to 345 Mev were used. Targets ranging from lithium to uranium were used and were backed by secondary targets of uranium and thorium. The yields are expressed in terms of the number of neutrons emitted per incident particle. Uranium targets gave the highest yield.

Average Fission Cross Section U238 for Fission Neutrons

By means of measurements with a double ionization chamber, the average fission cross section of U238 for neutrons from the fission of U235 was determined in terms of v, the average number of neutrons per fission of U235. the number of fission of U238 was measured in one of the ionization chambers while the number of fissions from the fission neutron source of U235 was measured in the other chamber. In the nine runs made to determine the cross section, a variety of different methods was used to determine the number of fissions and the mass of U238.

Bismuth metal was irradiated with 340 Mev protons in the circulating beam of the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron. Nuclides formed as fission products during the course of the bombardment were separated and studied through the use of radiochemical techniques.
