The Unstable Species and the Isotope Effect in the Pyrolysis of Diborane in a Shock Tube (open access)

The Unstable Species and the Isotope Effect in the Pyrolysis of Diborane in a Shock Tube

From American Chemical Society 145th National Meeting, New York, Sept. 1963. The pyrolysis of diborane was examined using a chemical shock tube as a reactor. Additional evidence for the existence of hexaborane-12 and heptaborane- 11 and -13 was obtained. The presence of a large net normal isotope effect in the formation of tetraborane and hexaborane and a net inverse isotope effect in the formation of pentaborane-9 are observed. A mechanism, consisting of a series of competitive reactions and eqailibria, in which tetraboraue is the precursor of pentaborane-11 and hexaborane but not of pentaborane-9 is shown to be compatible with the observed isotope effect. Data obtained by examining the pyrolysis of various mixtures of boron hydrides are also consistent with the mechanism. (auth)

Growth and Movement of Smallmouth Buffalo, Ictiobus Bubalus (Rafinesque), in Watts Bar Reservoir, Tennessee (open access)

Growth and Movement of Smallmouth Buffalo, Ictiobus Bubalus (Rafinesque), in Watts Bar Reservoir, Tennessee

The smallmouth buffalo fish, Ictiobus bubalus (Rafinesque), population of Watts Bar Reservoir, of the Tennessee River down stream from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was investigated in order to describe its age distribution, growth rates, dispersion, and importance as an accumulator of radionuclides. Measurements and scale samples were taken from commercially-caught fish and fish caught in the ORNL tagging operations. Scale impressions were anaiyzed for age and growth phenomena. Dispersion of smallmouth buffalo was investigated by conventional of ging methods and by autoradiographic analyses of scales. Stable and radiochemicsl composition of scales was examined by spectrographic analysis, flame spectrophotometer and radiometric surveys. Calcium was the most abundance element in fish scales with at lease twenty-three other elements present in varying quantities. Fish scaless and bone were found to contain radionuclides of ruthenium, cesium, zirconium, zinc, and cobalt. Radiometric surveys of scales revealed the Watts Bar Reservoir smallmouth buffalo population was a relatively minor accumulator of radionuclides with only 0.08 per cent showing the presence of artificially produced radionuclides. Approximately 6 per cent of the Clinch River fish and 77 per cent of the White Oak Creek fish had accumulations. Limited data on dispersion were determined from conventional tags. Much more dispersion …

General Circulation of the Atmosphere and Weather in the Mediterranean (open access)

General Circulation of the Atmosphere and Weather in the Mediterranean

The occurrence of mistral winds in the Mediterranean shows a correlation with blocking activity over the eastern Atlantic. Apparently for this reason periods with a ''midwinter dip'' in the zonal available potential energy of the northern hemisphere are favored by mistral occurrence. There also is a tendency for a 22- to 26-day cycle to appear in pressure gradients at the 500- and 100-mb surfaces along the southern coast of France. Such pressure gradients, if they exceed a certain magnitude, are indicative of mistral episodes.

Low-Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. Quarterly report 3, October 1976--December 1976 (open access)

Low-Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. Quarterly report 3, October 1976--December 1976

The potential for future widespread use of photovoltaic systems for the generation of electric power was the motivation for the establishment, in January 1975, of the Photovoltaic Conversion Program by ERDA's Division of Solar Energy. The Program's activities are planned to develop and to promote the use of photovoltaic systems to such an extent that the private sector will produce and utilize cost-competitive photovoltaic systems. As part of the ERDA Program, the Low-Cost Silicon Solar Array Project (LSSA) was established in January 1975. The activities and progress of the LSSA Project during the months of October, November, and December 1976 are described. The Project objective is to develop the national capability to produce low-cost, long-life photovoltaic arrays at a rate greater than 500 megawatts per year and a price of less than $500 per kilowatt peak by 1986. The array performance goals include an efficiency greater than 10% and an operating lifetime in excess of 20 years. The approach is to reduce the cost of solar cell arrays by improving solar array manufacturing technology and by increasing solar array production capacity and quantity. Forty-seven contracts have been awarded to date, to industrial firms and university and independent laboratories for experimental …

Klamath County geo-heating district feasibility study (open access)

Klamath County geo-heating district feasibility study

The results are presented of an agreement between the Klamath County Commissioners and Oregon Institute of Technology Geo-Heat Utilization Center for the conceptual design, cost analysis and plan for space heating a number of public buildings in Klamath Falls, Oregon with geothermal hot water. This project was principally aimed at supplying geothermal heat to ten city and county buildings by hot water extracted from the existing museum well. The supply system is also designed to include the post office and a new building to be built in the vicinity of the courthouse. The fluid would be piped from the museum well to three liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers and returned to the area of the producing well for reinjection into the same aquifer. The study also considered space heating of 98 additional buildings in the downtown business district equivalent to the ten public buildings and incorporating a snow removal grid on Main Street between Eleventh and Fourth Streets. The geothermal fluid would be supplied from wells in the vicinity of Old Fort Road (city police pistol range) and returned for reinjection. Based on the study, the Center has concluded that no major resource or engineering difficulties exist that would prevent the ten-building …

Steady-State Thermomechanical Finite Element Analysis of Elastoviscoplastic Metal Forming Processes (open access)

Steady-State Thermomechanical Finite Element Analysis of Elastoviscoplastic Metal Forming Processes

Extrusion and rolling processes exhibiting large amounts of plastic flow are analyzed using a finite element technique that is based on a modified creeping viscous flow approximation. The technique, called the initial stress-rate method, iteratively corrects creeping viscous flow solutions to generate results that include elastic response. The momentum equations have been coupled with the energy equation to provide the capability to predict thermomechanical response during forming operations.
