Wight confirms that he is available to speak at the meeting and is "by no means a famous man" but, complying with the request by Carswell for a personal sketch, details his background: Born in 1889, a great grandson of Lyman Wight, who brought a colony to Texas in the days of the Republic; graduated Austin College in 1909 and spent 1912-1913 in Panama in the service of the Isthmian Canal Commission then engaged in building the canal; graduated the University of Texas (in Law) in 1915 and practiced law under Ellis Douthit in Sweetwater 1915-1917. "I went to the First Officers' Training Camp at Leon Springs in 1917; was commissioned captain, assigned to the Regular Army, going Overseas with the First Trench Mortar Battalion, which was engaged as Infantry at Chateau Thierry; operated two batteries of French Artillery at St. Miheil; and both operated as Infantry and used its Mortars in the Argonne. He advises Carswell that after their visit he went to see Mr. Duff and had a nice visit with him and others in the office. Mr. Duff had nothing definite at the time but informed Couch that they might have an opening within a short time. Dilworth acknowledges his receipt of letter and membership progress report from Carswell, comments on the good numbers regarding the membership growth of the Legion then compliments Carswell and the other Legionnaires of that Division as doing a "swell" job.

Wash and he were in Abilene to see if he could help them "get an under-cover man to catch some of the boot-leggers in their town".

C., Manpower Division, State Headquarters for Selective Service, Austin, Texas dated January 14, 1944. Nalle advises the Chairman, in reference to a letter by Carswell dated January 10, that a registrant having been nominated for appointment as midshipman should be required to register and be classified IV-B.

Brown advises Carswell that he is replying in the absence of General Key and that the application received from Carswell is being turned over to Col. Miller for his file and consideration.

Lillius for army hostess at the Abilene Camp and advises that she will receive careful consideration when selections are made.

Roberts acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Carswell dated January 10th and expresses his appreciation for Carswell's efforts in behalf of the men of the 45th Division.

MIller was described by Professor Hassler as a man of very high quality. Carl commends the work Carswell is sponsoring describing it as "of the highest quality" then wishes for Carswell the greatest measure of success possible.

A letter written to Legionnaire Thos. N. Carswell, Fifth Division Commander, The American Legion, Abilene, Texas, from Charlie Maisel, Department Commander, Phillips, Texas, dated January 19, 1943. Maisel advises that the weekly membership report shows Carswell's territory behind as compared to the same date last year and explains that the Department is ahead of last year, therefore, others are carrying his load. He offers the assistance of the Department Headquarters if needed.

Stevenson expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell dated January 2 and for his assurance of friendship and assistance. "No man can succeed politically without a host of good friends who are willing to aid the efforts he puts forth to become acquainted with the voters." Stevenson expresses his appreciation for the knowledge that "so many people are willing to lend a helping hand" and advises Carswell of his hope of seeing him while in his community, that he will be glad to have "the benefit of his suggestions and advice".
