Nine-Channel Polychromator For Observation Of Time-Dependent Spectral Line Profiles

The instrument (polychromator) described observes time-dependent spectral-line profiles by simultaneous measurement at nine different wavelengths of light intensity as a function of time. A cylindrical lens magnifies the dispersion of a Jarrell-Ash Model S2000 Ebert Monochromator and forms an image on a light-pipe solder. Light pipes transfer light from various sections of the image--i.e., different wavelengths--to photomultiplier tubes, and the responses are displayed on oscilloscopes. The instrument has been used to look at total wavelength spans of 15 A and 20 A.

Influence of Different Y Chromosomes on Secondary Nondisjunction in D. Melanogaster

Females heterozygous for a wildtype X chromosome from a Samarkand stock and an chromosome of the composition [formula] were tested for the frequency of X-chromosomal non-disjunction and segregation of the X's when Y chromosomes of different types were present in the females. The Y chromosomes used were 1) a normal unmarked Y, 2) [formula], 3) [formula] and 4) [formula] (a chromosome which arose in one of our experiments and has not yet been analyzed). Since this was only a preliminary test no attempt was made to isogenize the stocks. Larger scale experiments are planned in which these and other Y's will be used and the genetic background will be strictly controlled.

The Tides: A Dynamic Explanation Based Upon Fundamental Physical Concepts

A model is proposed to directly relate observed tidal action with orbital movements of the moon and the earth. The basic model consists of a unit mass acting as a free point on the rotating earth's surface and being carried into a field gradient. The field is such as to cause the free point to "fall" along the surface, gain a velocity with respect to the earth's surface, and thus produce a tidal interaction at coastal barriers. Gyroscopic and resonant oscillatory current effects are not treated.

Decay-Energy Systematics Of The Heavy Elements

Figures 1 and 2 summarize total decay energies for the four radioactive series. The alpha-decay energy obtained by measuring the energy of the alpha particle leading to the ground state includes the energy of the recoil nucleus. The curve shown in figure 3 defines in broad outline the conditions and regions of alpha instability. A great deal more is to be learned from a more detailed examination of the region where alpha radioactivity is prominent. Of great value to the experimentalist is that he is able to predict alpha energies, and the agreement between predicted and measured values often serves as a criterion for isotopic assignment. A number of systems for correlating alpha decay energies have been employed, and that perhaps most widely used is illustrated in figure 4. Here the isotopes of each element on a mass number vs. energy plot are joined, resulting in a family of curves which over a wide region comprise a series of nearly parallel lines.

A repeatable technique for preparation of thin, self-supporting copper films has been developed at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, California. The process, done in a vacuum chamber, involves evaporation of copper by electron bombardment, and deposition of the copper on a detergent-coast glass substrate. The copper film is later removed from the substrate by immersion in water.

Non-military Uses of Nuclear Explosions

Introduction. With the development of fission and subsequently of thermonuclear explosives, a very large source of cheap energy has become available. The problem of using this energy for peaceful purposes safely and economically presents itself as one of the most interesting and important of our time. In explosions the energy is released very suddenly. Conversion of this sudden release of energy at extremely high temperature and pressure into the form of useful work, either mechanical or chemical or thermal, must be accomplished in order for such explosions to have nonmilitary uses. The technical feasibility of such conversions in a number of different instances will be described in this article. At the same time one must be able to control nuisance effects. Examples of these are seismic effects, the blast and heat which at least in the atmosphere always accompany such explosions, and the problem of radioactivity. Even given the technical feasibility of these accomplishments, which in some cases seems quite clear from what is known already, one must prove economic feasibility. That is to say, one must show that the cost of certain nonmilitary undertakings will be considerably less by the use of nuclear explosions than by conventional methods.

Convergence of the Quasi-chemical Method for the Ising Square Lattice

The Ising model, a system of atoms arranged on a lattice with simple nearest neighbor interactions, provides a more or less realistic description of many physical systems. The state of each atom is specified by a two-valued variable, which may be identified with: (1) its spin (up or down), if one wishes to describe a magnetic system; (2) its identity (A or B), if one wishes to describe a a mixture of two kinds of atoms; or (3) its presence or absence (atom or hole), if one is dealing with a lattice gas. In all three cases it is assumed that the energy of a configuration of the system, aside from the energy of interaction with external fields, is simply a sum of energies of nearest-neighbor pairs, the energy of a pair being zero if the two atoms are similar, and the sum if they are different. In describing the calculations, we shall use the terminology appropriate to (2), but the results will be general statements about the model.

Polarization in Pion-Nucleon Scattering and the Second and Third Pion-Nucleon Resonances

Abstract. The polarization of the recoil nucleon in pion-nucleon scattering is studied from the point of view of providing a means of distinguishing among the various angular momentum assignments proposed for the higher pion-nucleon resonances. It is shown that polarization in this reaction is just as useful a guide as polarization in photoproduction. In particular, a measurement of the polarization at and in the neighborhood of 90 degrees in the energy range between the first and third resonances should give a fairly convincing verification of one or the other of the prevailing assignments.

In particular, it compares the costs of sea disposal in depths of 1000 fathoms and of 2000 fathoms off the California coast with land burial of the wastes at the Hanford Atomic Products Operation (HAPO), Richland, Washington, at the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS), Idaho Falls, Idaho, or at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), Nevada. In the comparison, the cost of utilizing a commercial waste-disposal firm is also shown as well as a tentative cost of using the Military Sea Transport Service (MSTS).

The Homopolar Device (open access)

The Homopolar Device

This paper is intended as a preliminary report on the Homopolar configuration (axial magnetic field with radial electric field), which is the rotating configuration most thoroughly studied thus far. The analysis presented in this paper applies principally to the "ideal" Homopolar, that is, the configuration free from electrode-sheath drops and other disturbing but remediable phenomena. Design considerations for various interesting plasma appliances are derived and documented with preliminary experimental results. The experiments have been carried out under high-density (pinch-type) conditions which favor the creation of a totally rotating plasma and the actual physical measurement of the characteristics of such a plasma. When larger models of the Homopolar are built, it will be possible to use the present pinch-type technique of plasma formation at much lower density, just as has been done in the case of the toroidal stabilized pinch.

Radiation Hazards In Space Flight (open access)

Radiation Hazards In Space Flight

During the past five years, potentialities of space travel have greatly increased and new knowledge has become available regarding the nature of cosmic radiation. In the present article the knowledge pertinent to dose evaluation is reviewed for conditions of flight in space in the vicinity of the earth but away from the influence of its atmosphere or magnetic field. Certain properties of the heavy nuclei are also discussed as well as some of the available information on their actual biological effects. Development and completion of the new Heavy Ion Linear Accelerator allows extension of quantitative biological work with these particles. Finally, the statistical nature of the hazard from cosmic radiations and the limitations of space flight due to such rays are discussed.
