Hydrologic Effects of Annually Diverting 131,000 Acre-Feet of Water from Dillon Reservoir, Central Colorado (open access)

Hydrologic Effects of Annually Diverting 131,000 Acre-Feet of Water from Dillon Reservoir, Central Colorado

From abstract: because of the increased demands for water in eastern Colorado, principally in the urbanizing Denver metropolitan area, increased diversions of water from Dillon Reservoir are planned. Estimates of end-of-month storage in Dillon Reservoir, assuming the reservoir was in place and 131,000 acre-feet of water were diverted from the reservoir each year, were reconstructed by mass balance for the 1931-77 water years. Based on the analysis, the annual maximum end-of-month drawdown below the elevation at full storage would have been 171 feet.

Interim Report on Geologic Investigations in the Monument Valley Area, Arizona

From abstract: The Geological Survey has completed a program of uranium investigation and geologic mapping in the Monument Valley area, Apache and Navajo Counties, Ariz. The program, undertaken on behalf of the 'Atomic Energy Commission, had two principal objectives. The first was to establish prospecting guides for uranium ore deposits. The second objective was to appraise the relative favorableness of formations and areas for the occurrence of uranium deposits in order to select localities that deserve further exploration.

Lost Creek (Wamsutter) Schroeckingerite Deposit, Sweetwater County, Wyoming (open access)

Lost Creek (Wamsutter) Schroeckingerite Deposit, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

Summary: The Lost Creek schroeckingerite deposit in Sweetwater County, Wyo., has attracted attention in the past both as an occurrence of comparatively rare minerals and more recently as a possible source of uranium ore. During the summer of 1948 a newly-formed company by the name of Uranium, Inc., explored part of the deposit by bulldozer trenching and drilling. under the technical direction of the Minerals Engineering Company of Grand Junction, Colo. Examination of the significant exposures of the schroeckingerite deposit indicated that the uraniferous beds are discontinuous and that their areal distribution is erratic. The overburden has an average thickness of 2.5 feet.

Maximum Accelerators Caused by Underground Nuclear Explosions in the Oak Spring Formation in Area 12 of the Nevada Test Site at Distances of 5 to 300 Kilometers: a Preliminary Summary (open access)

Maximum Accelerators Caused by Underground Nuclear Explosions in the Oak Spring Formation in Area 12 of the Nevada Test Site at Distances of 5 to 300 Kilometers: a Preliminary Summary

From introduction: The results presented in this preliminary report are principally concerned with the ground motion caused by seven underground nuclear explosions (table 1) in the bedded tuff of the Oak Spring formation in Area 12. Ground motions were recorded at stations as close as 5 kilometers and as far as 300 kilometers from the explosions (fig 1 and table 2). The results for the Bianca and especially the Evans explosion are meager because the first was accompanied by a Test Site-wide moznentary power failure and because the yield of the second was so far below the anticipated yield that uncertain results were obtained. Ground motions caused by most of the air explosions in Operations Plumbbob and Hadtack - Phase 2 were recorded and have been partly analyzed. Results are presented in this report only where they relate significantly to analysis of the underground explosions. The effects of most of the small underground explosions in Area 3 (center of Yucca Flat) that had significant yields were also recorded. The results have not yet been interpreted.

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey (open access)

Nitrification in Four Acidic Streams in Southern New Jersey

Abstract: Chemical and microbiological data from four characteristically acidic streams in southern New Jersey were used to evaluate seven factors related to the proclivity of each stream to nitrify under the influence of secondary sewage effluent. pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen were used as indicators of a stream conditions while neutralization of alkalinity, nitrogen species trends, BOD/NOD incubations, and nitrifying bacteria densities served as actual nitrification indicators. Hay Stack Brook showed strong evidence for nitrification on the basis of all four nitrification indicators while Landing Creek was nitrifying little if at all. Hammonton Creek is apparently nitrifying, but because of uncertainty in the downstream trends of the nitrogen species, and a lower level of alkalinity neutralization, it is nitrifying less than Hay Stack Brook. Squankum Branch showed some evidence for nitrification on the basis of the BOD/NOD incubations. The acidic character of these streams does not appear to be an exclusive factor in determining whether the stream will undergo nitrification.
