Analysis of temperature-time data from 3 m drillholes at Crystal Hot Springs, Utah (open access)

Analysis of temperature-time data from 3 m drillholes at Crystal Hot Springs, Utah

A method for determining the background geothermal gradient values through the analysis of temperature measurements at multiple depths to 3 m and recorded over a time span of several days is presented. The analysis is based on the amplitude decay and phase shift of temperature waves with depth. Diurnal and other high frequency temperature variations are used to compute thermal diffusivities which in turn are used to model and remove the effect of the annual temperature wave. The analysis considers both a homogeneous half space and a two layer medium consisting of an overburden of finite thickness overlying a semi-infinite substratum. The method was tested in three holes in the Crystal Hot Springs geothermal field. Temperatures in each hole were recorded once a minute over a period of three days with a probe containing thermistors at eight different depths. Five of the thermistors were positioned at shallow depths (less than or equal to 0.5 m) to monitor diurnal and other high frequency waves and three at greater depths (greater than or equal to 1 m) to measure lower frequency variations. Since measurements were recorded at only three sites, the accuracy and reliability of the method is not fully evaluated. Potential …

Preliminary Report on Geologic Investigations in White Canyon, San Juan County, Utah, 1952 (open access)

Preliminary Report on Geologic Investigations in White Canyon, San Juan County, Utah, 1952

From introduction: Field work, begun in the field season of 1951, was continued by the U. S. Geological Survey in the White Canyon area, San Juan County, Utah, from May 1 to October 28, 1952, The objectives of this work were to study the habits and character of uranium deposits in the area, to determine control and guides to ore and suitable areas for physical exploration, and to map and study the ore-bearing and adjacent strata to determine the regional geologic controls and habits of the uranium deposits, The White Canyon project is part of a regional mapping program on the Colorado Plateau being conducted by the Geological Survey on behalf of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission.

The East Slope No. 2 Uranium Prospect, Piute County, Utah (open access)

The East Slope No. 2 Uranium Prospect, Piute County, Utah

From abstract: The secondary uranium minerals autunite, metatorbernite, uranophane (?), and schroeckingerite occur in altered hornfels at the East Slope No. 2 uranium prospect. The deposit, in sec. 6, T. 27 S., R. 3 W., Piute County, Utah, is about I mile west of the Bullion Monarch mine in the central producing area of the Marysvale uranium district. Hornfels, formed by contact metamorphism of bullion Canyon volcanic rocks along the edge of a quartz monzonite stock, is in fault contact with the later Mount Belknap rhyolite.

Uranium Deposits on the Bulloch Group of Claims, Kane County, Utah

From abstract: The Bulloch group of uranium claims are in T. 40 S., R. 9 we, Kane County, Utah. The past production has been 8.5 tons of submarginal ore submitted to the Marysvale purchasing depot of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1950; this shipment assayed 0.16 percent U308, Uranium is finely disseminated in clay, carbonaceous clay, carbonized wood fragments, iron-oxide concretions, petrified logs, sandstone, and conglomerates of the lower part of"the Dakota sandstone and upper part of the Summerville formation. Small quantities of carnotite, autunite, and torbernite are exposed in the conglomerate and sandstone on Lynn Nos. 2 and 3 claims.

Investigation of Shinarump Channels on Oljetoh Mesa, Arizona - Utah (open access)

Investigation of Shinarump Channels on Oljetoh Mesa, Arizona - Utah

From to the files: The Shinarump-Moenkopi contact on Oljetoh Mesa in the Monument Valley district, Arizona-Utah, was examined from November 5 to 15, 1951, to determine the location of and the mineralization in Shinarump channels. Twenty-seven distinct channel outcrops were located and examined. Three of these channel outcrops are mineralized and the remaining 24 are barren. Plate I shows the distribution of the Shinarump, the Moenkopi, and the DeChelly member of the Cutler formation; the location of the Shinarmp channel outcrops; the channel trend where there is good evidence for such a trend. The Hoskinrnini tongue of the Cutler was mapped with the Moenkopi as it is not a good mappable unit in this area. The three mineralized outcrops are indicated by the letters A, G, and AA while the barren outcrops bear the letters B to F and H to Z.
