Rice has enclosed three important documents to be shared among the members of every chapter: the new Western Area Handbook, the revised and updated Western Area By-Laws, and a copy of Rice's reply to a letter about concerns related to expenditures for a gala at the upcoming National Assembly.

Letter from Thelma Rice to Mary H. Langford stating that she received Langford's letter about the appropriateness of The Links, Inc. holding an expensive gala during a time of economic hardship. Although she understands Langford's concerns, the gala is a tradition for which planning began several years ago. She is not sure whether plans for the gala can be altered at this point but will make sure her concerns are discussed with the national director.

Letter from Mary P. Douglass to prospective exhibitors and vendors for the The Links' 28th National Assembly. Douglass invites vendors and exhibitors to exhibit their organizations and products at this upcoming conference in Dallas, Texas. She includes the rules and regulations for the exhibitions as well as an application form.

Letter from Arlene J. Crewdson, artistic director of the O'Rourke Center for the Performing Arts, to Dr. Peter Wolkonsky. She sends word that she enjoyed reading Sterling Houston's play, A Brief History of American Song, but that her company will be unable to produce it due to prior commitments.

Chapters are requested to send all required documentation, including a membership roster, officer list, bylaws, and taxation forms to the area director. Also, chapters should consider making donations to a number of funds, including a relief fund for victims of an earthquake in Oakland. Higgins suggests that because breast cancer rates are increasing in the general population chapters should plan a day for members to receive mammograms in lieu of a regular chapter meeting.

Volunteers have been organized into a task force, and its first meeting will be February 4, 1988. Directions to the meeting location are provided.

Letter from Harry Robinson, Jr. to Margaret Winn apologizing for an error in the program booklet for the Texas Black Women's Conference. The San Antonio chapter of The Links, Inc. had purchased an ad in the program at the best of its member Josephine Bellinger. However, because the information in the ad was incorrect, Robinson has reimbursed the chapter. He expresses his admiration for Bellinger and hopes the chapter will continue its involvement with the conference in the future.

This letter from American Airlines to Western Area Director of The Links, Inc. Doris McCarroll gives confirmation that American Airlines will serve as the official airline for the 28th Western Area Conference of The Links, Inc. in Waco, Texas. The letter outlines the promotions that conference attendees will enjoy if they choose to fly with American Airlines.

Letter from Margaret Winn to parents of Project LEAD participants at S. H. Gates Elementary School and Martin Luther King Middle School thanking them for allowing their children to participate in a community service project sponsored by the San Antonio chapter of The Links, Inc. Winners of the student poster contest have been selected and will collaborate with a local artist to reproduce their designs on parade banners. Winn would like the parents of the winners to grant the chapter permission to oversee these efforts.
