Stone says that he can prove Mr. Carmer failed to exact the payment of stock and therefore take recourse on the boarding house, yet Dashiell claims that Stone is and was president of the board of stockholders and also failed to exact the unpaid stock. The stockholders do not trust Dashiell as their advisor because they think he is attempting to get the best bargain that he can for Mrs. Carmer.
