Photograph of a new Bermuda grass waterway which was sodded using Bermuda roots on February 25, 1953, and planted to corn on March 25, 1953. Cultivation of corn stimulated the growth and spread of the grass which was almost a solid cover when the photo was taken. A fair yield of corn was made. S. E. Jones, Soil Conservation Service [SCS] technician, holds one of the Bermuda grass runners which is around 18 inches long. Class III, Soil Unit 2 BL. See TX-48-593-A. TX-48-593-B

Photograph of a waterway planted to Bermuda grass sprigs in April, 1949 and then cotton was planted in the same bed with sprig. In the cultivation of cotton a good cover of grass resulted. The waterway was overseeded to King Ranch bluestem in April, 1950. The waterway is 100 feet wide. TX-47, 510.

The grass is waist high and has made excellent growth. The grass had excellent possibilities for seed production but an early November freeze caught the grass before the seed were sod [?]. Photograph of Madrid Clover and Johnsongrass as an excellent mixture for hay. The clover was planted on Johnsongrass land in March 1951, and was harvested for hay in that year. The clover was harvested for seed in 1992 and yielded around 300 pounds per acre where the photo was made. Soil Unit # 4, Class I. TX-48-123.

Photograph of a homemade weed mower used to mow weeds in citrus orchards. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Home made [sic] weed mower used to mow weeds in citrus orchards. Whirling blades with mower knives on edges cuts weeds at height of about 4" from ground. Power takeoff from tractor – 5 disc blades, about 30" diameter, cuts strip about 12.5 feet wide. No other cultivation practiced in these orchards for last year."

The back of the photograph proclaims, "Stalk cutter used in citrus orchard for chopping sown cover of weeds and grasses. No cultivation is used. Cutter leaves thick cover of dead residue that protects the surface from erosion, increases infiltration of rainfall and reduces surface temperature and evaporation. Shield over part of cutter protects tree branches when working close to trees."

Photograph of eight acres of sweet clover planted in late October. The day before this picture was taken [taken on 1/28/1944}, 17 hogs, 1 horse, 24 grown cattle, 1 Brahma bull, and 10 calves were put out to graze and were still grazing by March 7, 1944. Top wall eaten off. Sweet clover was planted on different dates and fields are pastured by use of electric fences to graze in rotation. TX-41, 435.
