Carswell advises of his travel plans, his preparation for the Lions Program and the Radford testimonial dinner ["50 Years of building Abilene"] noting the late work hours, hard work and no money. His postscript refers to late nights and tells about going to Breckenridge to the Lions Conference taking Mrs. Sandefer with him, his returning at 5 p.m., reading awhile, of going to Church then over to Barnes playing checkers and talking until late.

A letter written to Ray Carswell, International Harvester Company, Jacksonville, Florida, from T. N. Carswell, dated June 20, 1938. Carswell expresses his appreciation for the card hoping Ray Carswell's visit was pleasant then describes his own trip to Virginia to where he carried Mother and Peggy Anne to spend the summer.

Sheppard acknowledges his receipt of the "communication" from Carswell and expresses his pleasure in having visited with Carswell while he was in Washington. He acknowledges that Carswell is leaving the Chamber of Commerce on September 1 wishing him success and adds, in a handwritten postscript, that he prizes Carswell's friendship more than he can express.

Carswell reports on a meeting held on December 12 and advises regarding the enclosed Pronouncement of this meeting in dealing with the liquor situation. Carswell requests that the Pastors and their congregations join the cause and pledge to aid the 24th Senatorial District Drys in the fight against the sale of liquor for social drinking in Dry Territory. Wight confirms that he is available to speak at the meeting and is "by no means a famous man" but, complying with the request by Carswell for a personal sketch, details his background: Born in 1889, a great grandson of Lyman Wight, who brought a colony to Texas in the days of the Republic; graduated Austin College in 1909 and spent 1912-1913 in Panama in the service of the Isthmian Canal Commission then engaged in building the canal; graduated the University of Texas (in Law) in 1915 and practiced law under Ellis Douthit in Sweetwater 1915-1917. "I went to the First Officers' Training Camp at Leon Springs in 1917; was commissioned captain, assigned to the Regular Army, going Overseas with the First Trench Mortar Battalion, which was engaged as Infantry at Chateau Thierry; operated two batteries of French Artillery at St. Miheil; and both operated as Infantry and used its Mortars in the Argonne. Bannister, deems the enclosed letter self-explanatory and assures Carswell of his interest in the guard and of his desire to be of service. Marsh advises that there is no better answer to Carswell's question, "What is Americanism?" than to refer to his book "THE AMERICAN CANON" and notes that he has attached a circular advertising the book.
