A letter written to "Dossie" from T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas dated April 16, 1940. Carswell discusses the importance of the selection that must be made by the Trustees for a replacement for J. D. Sandefer as President of Hardin-Simmons University and offers his opinion that Rupert [Rupert N. Richardson] should be asked first. Carswell defends his opinion, noting the probability of "Dossie" being selected for the job thus requesting that "Dossie" encourage the selection of Rupert, in order to keep Rupert at Simmons, then the offer of the presidency would be made in due course to "Dossie".

Sandefer expresses his appreciation for the letter from Carswell knowing that some of his efforts as Chairman of the Board have been appreciated. He advises of his recent effort to obtain an armed services setup on the campus, the resignation of Dr. White as president of HSU and touches on a past discussion regarding allowing the Executive Committee to frame the policies stating, again, that his chairmanship was not perfect but that he did his best. Sandefer advises that Carswell was asked after by everyone at the Easter Service and offers his sympathy regarding Truett's death [E. Truett Compere].

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, The Hilton Hotel, El Paso, Texas from Rupert N. Richardson, Acting President, Hardin-Simmons University dated April 27, 1944. Richardson expresses his appreciation for the letter of April 25 and concurs that Carswell is "quite correct that we shall have probably the best opportunity for raising money that we shall have probably in our generation". Richardson advises of the difficulties encountered in Christian education in trying to "secure a man for the field" then gives his assurance of their efforts in watching Carswell's "place" while he is away.
