Barnes advises Carswell that it is unwise to undertake a return trip after the flu until he has regained all his strength. He advises that the cold spell is causing slowed business, that the snow is not damaging the crops but did kill the fruit and gardens and then dangles a few remarks regarding a business deal he made assuring that he will hold a part of it for Carswell if he is interested.
