This photograph is of a group of cavalrymen out on drill. There are many soldiers, ranged on the slope of a mountain and wearing dark uniforms and hats. Several of the men are standing with horses in the back or to the side. Two of the men have pins on their collars, showing that they are marksmen. Behind the men, there are rocks and desert plants.

[Charlien Gloyd McNabb]

Photograph of "Charlien Gloyd McNabb. Born September 27, 1868 and died June 10, 1929. Her maiden name was Charlien Clara Annie Gloyd. She was the only child of Carry A. Nation. This picture is a reproduction from the original picture made about 1886, estimated" as written on paper stapled to the inside of the folder. McNabb has long dark wavy hair that is loose and flowing down her sides. She is leaning against an ornate wooden structure that has printed fabric folded across it on the left. McNabb has her hands clasped and at her face. She is wearing a dark, long sleeved dress with high collar. A strip of white can be seen at the top of her collar. Photograph is enclosed in a gray folder and was placed in a framed matte.

[Colonel George R. Howard]

Colonel George Robert Howard was born on June 6, 1818. He married Cornelia Cox and they came to Palestine from Tennessee in 1849. Given the title of Colonel when he organized a company of men during the Civil War, he later served in the Texas Legislature, held several county offices and was Mayor of Palestine from 1886-1887. Colonel Howard was an active merchant in Palestine and in 1855 his store was located on the east side of the courthouse square. Their home, now referred to as “The Howard House” by local residents, is located at 1101 N. Perry Street. It was built in 1851 on land deeded to Colonel Howard from Judge Reuben Reeves on August 17, 1850. He died on December 28, 1900 and is buried in the Old section of the Palestine City Cemetery.

[Front exterior of Governor's Mansion]

Photograph of exterior front of Texas Governor's Mansion. The columns are dark, and the grounds are a bit unkempt and the windows shuttered. The mansion was built by Abner Cook in 1855 and was continuously occupied since 1856. The occupant here in 1886 was Governor John Ireland. The mansion was declared a Texas historical landmark in 1962 and a national historic landmark in 1970.
