Interview with Frederick W. Rosen, a Navy veteran (Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 15, USS Randolph, USS Noble). His experiences as a PT boat skipper in the North African and European Theaters and various other duties in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Early naval career, 1941-42; assignment to the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons Center, Melville, Rhode Island, October, 1942; association with future President John F. Kennedy at Melville; assignment to PT Squadron 15, 1942; appointment as skipper of PT-207; combined operations with British patrol-torpedo boats out of Bône, Algeria, 1943; move to Bizerte, Tunisia, and operations around Sicily and screening the landing force, 1943; move to Palermo, Sicily, and operations off the west coast of Italy, 1943; invasion of Italy at Salerno and screening the landing force, 1943; operations out of La Maddalena, 1943; operations from Bastia, Corsica, 1943; operations with OSS operatives in southern France and northwestern Italy, 1944; return to the U.S., 1944; assignment to the aircraft carrier USS Randolph as assistant gunnery officer, 1944; assignment to the APA USS Noble, 1945; operations off Okinawa, 1945; liberation of American and Allied POWs in Korea, 1945. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Al Stevens. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1943 as a metallurgical engineer. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the Navy Electronics School at Harvard University as well as a specialized radar training program organized by MIT at the Harbor Building in Boston, Massachusetts. He received further training in radar countermeasures at Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. He served on the USS Wasatch (ACG-9). When the ship was anchored, he was assigned to deliver orders and mail. He describes the Operation Olympic portion of the plan to invade Japan. He was part of the force that occupied Wakanoura and Nagoya, Japan. He shares an anecdote about obtaining a Japanese sword as a souvenir in Nagoya. In North China he participated in the repatriation of the Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans. He wrote a book, ?Up Close and Personal,? about his World War II experiences.

Oral History Interview with Dean Caswell, December 8, 2021
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Dean Caswell. Caswell volunteered for the Marine Corps two weeks prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He eventually went to flight training before being assigned aboard USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) from which he flew Corsairs. Caswell made over 100 combat flights from Bunker Hill, eventually becoming an ace with Marine Fighter Squadron 221 (VMF-221). He shares on anecdote about getting seven enemy planes in one mission. He also shares anecdotes from throughout his long career in the Marine Corps.

The Civic Roles of Neighborhood Associations in Seoul, Korea: Implications for Urban Governance
This dissertation answers three research questions: "What differences and similarities exist among neighborhood associations in the United States, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea?," "What are the civic roles of neighborhood associations in apartment complexes in Seoul, South Korea?," and "What factors promote neighborhood associations to play civic roles in urban governance?" To answer the first question, this research analyzes the purposes, governance structures, roles, and legal substance of neighborhood associations by reviewing previous studies, public and legal documents, court cases in the U.S., and by conducting interviews. To answer the second and the third questions, a 2016 survey, "Understanding the Roles of Neighborhood Associations in Urban Governance" was conducted with 154 representatives of neighborhood associations in Seoul. Social capital theory, government failure theory, and third party government theory were used to create hypotheses that test proposed relationships about neighborhood interactions, community characteristics, and the civic roles played by neighborhood associations. The findings show that neighborhood associations have adopted several roles including service provider, partner in public service delivery for local government, and advocate for residents in urban governance.
