Oral History Interview with S'ydney Benemon, June 23, 2016

Ms. Benemon was born and raised in Lufkin, Texas. She attended segregated schools in Lufkin until the schools integrated in 1970, her senior year. Ms. Benemon went on to work for the Lufkin State School for decades before retiring in 2016. During her interview, Ms. Benemon provided information about the community of North Lufkin when she was growing up. Ms. Benemon also described businesses and people that were prominent in the North Lufkin community. Further, Ms. Benemon described the many conflicts that occurred during the first year of integration, such as an incident when armed white parents came to Lufkin High school in efforts to confront Black students. In response, some Black students staged a walkout/march. Ms. Benemon also discussed ongoing issues, including infrastructure, that the predominately Black community in Lufkin still face.

Interview with Lois Lorraine Green Shaw and Evelyn Mills Shields who have been friends for 49 years and live on the same street. Lois Shaw moved to Kerrville with her husband. She attended nursing school and worked in the operating room at Sid Peterson Hospital for many years, and later as a geriatrics administrator at a care facility. She is active in her church, St. Paul Methodist, and has served on many community boards. She and her husband Charles (deceased) had seven children. Evelyn Shields graduated from Doyle High School, she worked as therapist at Kerrville State Hospital for 33 years. She enjoys cooking and is active in her church, Mount Olive Baptist. She and her husband Vernon (deceased) had four children. Both women are members of the Red Hatters. Photographs relating to the interview follow the transcript text.

Mrs. Lutz discusses her ranching family, meeting her husband, Warren Wiggins, who was later killed in the Philippines during World War II, meeting her second husband who had been in Wiggins's company in the Philippines, and the Dodge dealership her second husband ran.
