Wool trench coat

Trench coat of brown and white tweed wool. A) Coat, street length, double breasted, with bracelet-length sleeves with wide turned-back cuffs. Secured at front with four large brown faux-tortoiseshell buttons in two pairs, and a fifth inner upper left collar point to secure label/placket. Slit pockets at hips. Lined in brown silk(?) Combined Designer's / Retailer's label at center back inside collar: "Pietro / Neiman-Marcus" [on same line, Pietro in tall thin letters at center, Neiman-Marcus in shorter thick letters extending across. Fabric maker's label at inside right side "Anglo Fabrics / 100%Wool" embroidered "over" a coat of arms design in damask with legend reading "Webster Dudley / Quality and Style". B) Belt covered in matching wool tweed, with rectangular buckle covered in same fabric. Backed in dark brown leather. Stamped on reverse: "10"

Evening dress

Light pink silk faille ballgown. Pink & green embroidery flowers. Low cut back & neck. Embroidery flowers starts from left back neck to right side of dress. Draping drapes from right shoulder to front of neck. Sleeveless, but has slight sleeve effect. Rhinestones in center of roses. Beads & sequins surrounding and on green stems and leaves. Right side has 2" to 3" folded upward pleat about 7" to 8" apart. Pink train coming from bodice back.

Child's dress

Girl's/toddler's float dress of blue nylon seersucker with printed pattern of tiny pink, blue, yellow, purple and green squares. Short puffed sleeves have white ruffled lace edging. White peter pan collar of organdy has white ruffled lace edging. Dress has front yoke with smocked detail below yoke in green, blue, pink, blue and then yellow. 2" wide hem (hand hemmed). Back gathers below yoke. Closure of two white buttons at back yoke. Label: "Lilliputian Bazaar / Trade Mark / Best & Co." Tag: "Yolande"

Cocktail Dress

Cocktail dress of black wool jersey knit. The late-day dress is of mid-length, with bateau (boat) neckline and short sleeves. Center back zipper with hook & eye at neckline. The fitted torso has a natural waistline with a fitted yoke from natural waist to full hip. Pleated/gathered skirt of black tissue faille begins below yoke and flares to hem. Around the waist is an attached wide faille sash which ties in front forming a bow with trailing ribbons. The bodice of the dress is lined in black and the skirt has a heavy fabric underskirt and two attached layers of net crinoline. Joint designer's and retailer's label sewn inside skirt: "Neiman-Marcus Dallas / Traina-Norell".

Cocktail / late day dress of black silk faille. Shallow scooped neckline, short "kimono" style sleeves with wide turn-backs. Bodice seamed, and with dropped waist. Full, mid-length skirt gathers into waist. Center back zipper with hook-and-eye at collar. Inner petticoat under skirt composed of two layers, inner plain black fabric layer and outer stiffened horsehair layer. Designer's label sewn inside skirt, outside of petticoat layer: "Neiman-Marcus Dallas / Traina-Norell".

Embroidered evening dress

Embroidered pale blue organdy evening dress. Two retailer's labels: "Neiman-Marcus". No designer's labels found. From gift agreement: Very, very light gray blue silk organza evening dress with calf-length front train in back. Scoop neck and cap sleeve of pale blue organza with appliqued floral embroidery. Same treatment at hem. Two attached underskirts with tiered 2" hems in pale blue. Pale blue faille covered stiff pelon type bottom underskirt with shirred 6" deep net at hemline. 2nd underskirt also has shirred net around back hemline.

Ensemble in black and oatmeal colored wool, consisting of: A) Jacket: Semi-fitted wool in abstracted herringbone weave with black and oatmeal yarns running double throughout; moderately rounded neckline with asymmetrical mandarin collar; full-length raglan sleeves with overarm seam and undersleeve; double breasted front opening with eight round, plastic, oatmeal colored buttons and four bound buttonholes supplemented by single hook & eye inside lap at waist; vertical welt pockets on front lined in black silk; fully lined in black silk. Designer's label at inside collar: "Balenciaga / 10 Avenue George V Paris" and "Made in France". Retailer's label at inside side seam: "Neiman-Marcus" B) Dress: Knee length dress; bodice of black wool gauze with jewel neckline; sleeveless; lapped center front opening with four round self-covered buttons and bound buttonholes supplemented by single snap and hook & eye; bodice gathers into seam at natural waistline; gathered hip yoke of same gauze; straight skirt of matching herringbone has three snaps at center front opening; folded hem; gauze is lined in black silk organdy; skirt is unlined.

Card and fabric samples from K. Wragge, Inc., a custom shirt making company. The card is shaped and illustrated to look like the torso and collar of a collared button down shirt. It is cream colored with blue linework and words. The fabric samples include striped fabric, fabric with different weave patterns, and solid colored fabric.

Hat

Hat of red straw. The low, flat-top crown slopes to base, swelling out to form a very narrow brim. The body of the hat is of a loose woven red straw overlaid with strips of woven red straw radiating from the top center of the crown. At the front of the hat is a dark red velvet bow. The interior of the hat is unlined, but the strips of straw continue under the brim, forming a self-lining. Around inside of crown at base is an inner hatband of dark red grosgrain ribbon. Attached to the inner hatband is a black elasticized cord to secure hat to wearer's head. Beneath brim towards back extend small red velvet covered metal(?) loops to help secure hat to wearer's head. Designer's label sewn inside crown: "Gilbert Orcel / Paris / Made in France. Retailer's label sewn to inner hatband: "Henri Bendel / New York"

[Package Labels from Wetzel Custom Tailors to D. W. Kempner]

Package labels and postcard from Wetzel Custom Tailors to D. W. Kempner. The labels are silver with red lettering. The first one is triangle shaped with some leaf motifs outlining the tip. The second label is rhombus shaped with two half-circle tabs on the sides and a border of bells on the top and bottom. The postcard informs Kempner that his garments are ready for fitting.
