Media Agenda-Building Effect: Analysis of American Public Apartheid Activities, Congressional and Presidential Policies on South Africa, 1976-1988 (open access)

Media Agenda-Building Effect: Analysis of American Public Apartheid Activities, Congressional and Presidential Policies on South Africa, 1976-1988

The mass media's role in informing the American public is critical to public support for government policies. The media are said to set the national agenda. This view is based on the assumption of selective coverage they give to news items. Media coverage also influences the salience the public attaches to issues. However, media agenda effect has been challenged by Lang and Lang (1983). These scholars, in their media agenda-building theory, argued that the success of media effect on national agenda is dependent on group support. In order to test this theory, time-related data on South Africa crises, media coverage"of South Africa, American public reactions, congressional, and presidential apartheid-related activities, between 1976 and 1988, were analyzed. Congressional anti-apartheid policies were the dependent and others, the independent variables. The theory made analysis of the data amenable to the additive adopted to test for the significance of the interactive variables, indicated that these variables were negatively related to congressional anti-apartheid policies. The additive model was subsequently analyzed. The time series multiple regression analysis was used in analyzing the relationships. Given autocorrelation and multicollinearity problems associated with time series analysis, the Arima (p, d, q) model was used to model the relationships. This …

Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Management in South African Automotive Industries (open access)

Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Management in South African Automotive Industries

Automotive industries in the developed world have strived to improve performance and productivity by incorporating Knowledge Management (KM) practices in their manufacturing processes. This has been attributed to the use of upgraded technological capabilities in the acquisition, sharing, and retention of organizational knowledge. Literature has unpacked that as much as automotive industries need Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) in their KM strategy, they should also include aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to facilitate and share knowledge (Wisskirchen et al., 2017; Calitz, Poisat & Cullen, 2017; Cronin, Conway & Walsh, 2019). More so, they recognised the limitations of ICTs concerning the management of tacit knowledge, which is intangible and difficult to share, as it plays a crucial role in the KM process. Despite the interest of many authors towards KM in automotive industries, there is a lack of studies aimed at investigating AI as a KM enabler in the South African automotive industry. This is a relevant issue as knowledge in the automotive industries tends to manifest itself tacitly. This realization has spawned a growing interest in incorporating advanced technologies like artificial intelligence into KM practices to overcome knowledge loss and bringing in innovation in automotive industries. It is against this backdrop; …

Wisdom as it Exists in a Professional’s Life (open access)

Wisdom as it Exists in a Professional’s Life

Recent years have seen the development of quite a few measures of wisdom (e.g. Ardelt (2003); Glück (2017); Staudinger and Pasupathi (2003); Sternberg (1998); Webster (2003)). With a focus on information professionals working in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector, this study is unique in the way it translated the quantitative measures used in previous study into a qualitative instrument that can allow wisdom aspects to be explored through interviews. Thus the purpose of this research was to investigate the key characteristics of wisdom for professionals working in the GLAM sector.
