Death and Life in the Big Red One: a Soldier's World War II Journey from North Africa to Germany

Joe Olexa enlisted in the US Army in December 1940, figuring that if he was going to be in a war, he might as well start training. Assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, nicknamed “The Big Red One,” he served in Company L of its 26th Infantry Regiment for the next four years. Along the way he trained with the division in maneuvers in the United States; shipped to England in 1942; landed at Oran, Algeria, in the Operation Torch landings of November 1942; and fought in Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Belgium, and Germany. Olexa was one of the first group of enlistees that brought the division up to full strength in the buildup prior to Pearl Harbor, and was a sergeant by the time he went overseas. He served as a squad leader, platoon sergeant, and acting platoon leader, outlasting nearly all the men in his company. His memoir features accounts of unusual adventures in Tunisia when his battalion was detached from the rest of the division, and presents a detailed and intense account of his platoon’s experiences at El Guettar. Changing Landscape of Scholarly Communications: Open Access

Elicitation of Tacit Knowledge Inside a Clinical Process Using the FRAM
The 17th International Conference on Knowledge Management was held in the historic city of Potsdam, Germany. Since the conference was among the first post-pandemic face to face conferences, the overall theme of the 17th edition of the ICKM conference rightly focused on “Knowledge, Uncertainty and Risks: From individual to global scale” at different levels of analysis and agency. This poster highlights the qualitative study which was conducted in a major regional hospital in Germany, using the FRAM to analyze the recurrent and complex process of surgical care preparation in the morning. The aim was to offer the hospital a detailed qualitative analysis to promote resilience and maintain a safe state of operating during this process. The FRAM illustrated relevant system functions and unveiled sources as well as effects or variabilities that are now in the process of being evaluated according to appropriate goals and values. In this way, the FRAM illuminates hidden but relevant knowledge, so to speak tacit knowledge, within a complex sociotechnical system that is difficult or impossible to identify otherwise.

First Observations from an Analysis of KM Job Adverts from English-Speaking Countries and Germany
This paper presents the first results from an analysis of recent job advertisements from online platforms from English and German-speaking countries. The full texts of about 4100 job adverts carrying the terms “knowledge manager” or “knowledge management” either in in the job title or in the short description have been analyzed. The main research aim was to identify the most common KM job titles, providing a basis for further analysis of tasks and required competencies to compare the data samples. In particular, the research will address the following research questions: RQ1: What are the job titles used in job adverts related to KM? RQ2: Which tasks are mainly associated with different KM job titles (roles)? RQ3: Which competencies & skill sets are typically required in job adverts? This research inform KM practitioners and HR managers as well as the KM community about landscape of KM roles, main tasks and skills required on the labor markets in the German-speaking (AU, CH, DE) countries and three English-speaking (AUS, UK, USA) countries.

Level of Adoption and Use of KM Practices in Supply Chains of Manufacturing Companies
Business competition increasingly involves entire supply chains (SCs) rather than individual firms. Thus, knowledge, which is a strategic resource for companies, needs to be managed properly not only in single firms, but also at inter-firm level and in SCs, so that companies can coordinate and co-manage resources, activities, and innovative efforts in collaboration with their partners for improved competitiveness. To this end, knowledge management (KM) practices and their adoption for the effective management of SC inter-firm relationships can be of great help, but the current studies on this aspect are very fragmented, and there is still insufficient knowledge of what practices are adopted to manage knowledge in inter-firm relationships and how intensely these are used. This study contributes to filling this gap by measuring the adoption and intensity of KM practices and comparing their use at the intra- and inter-firm level. A survey of a sample of European large and medium-sized manufacturing firms was used. A descriptive statistical analysis and a correlation analysis were performed on the collected data. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Harmonic Theory: Practical Manual of Harmony, Its Sources, History, and Traditions

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Harmonic Theory is the first comprehensive study of his concept of harmony that also traces the history of tonal relationships. Larisa P. Jackson describes and examines Rimsky-Korsakov’s distinctive harmonic theory using his Practical Manual of Harmony as a basis, and places it in historical context of nineteenth-century music theory. She explores in great detail a concept of tonal relationships, fundamental to Rimsky-Korsakov’s view of harmony, and relates this to ideas by German theorists of the period and the Russian theoretical tradition. Jackson examines the concept of modulation and of the relationship of keys and presents a model of his tonal space/map extrapolated from his harmonic system. She identifies specific treatises that help to trace ties between German theoretical ideas and Rimsky-Korsakov’s work.

Workgroup KM Certification (ISO 30401/DIN SPEC 91443)
New standards (ISO 30401 and DIN SPEC 91443) provide new momentum for knowledge management initiatives. Certification becomes a priority to demonstrate KM-proficiency on an organizational level to external partners (customers, suppliers, future employees) as well as to create a sense of urgency within organizations, in particular among organizational leadership. In this workshop, a joint working group of two independent communities and a research organisation, the Association of Knowledge Management for German speaking countries and the Federal Association of Intellectual Capital Statements e.V. presents the framework of DIN SPEC 91443 which was designed specifically for SMEs to operationalize the KM requirements of ISO 30401. The general objective of the workshop is to reflect on suitability of various instruments of KM, in particular the Intellectual Capital Statement – Made in Germany, to deliver on the standards requirements. Looking at some practical cases, an early-stage concept of auditing structures and procedures will be discussed. As a result of the workshop, the organizers aim to propose an auditing framework to certify knowledge management systems as a follow up.

A Modern Performance Edition of Nina D'Aubigny Von Engelbrunner's Deutsche, Italienische und Französische Gesänge mit Begleitung des Pianoforte
This dissertation examines the work of German composer and vocal pedagogue Nina d'Aubigny von Engelbrunner through her collection of songs entitled "Deutsche, Italienische und Französische Gesänge mit Begleitung des Pianoforte," published in 1797. A brief overview of the life and works of Ms. d'Aubigny is provided, followed by a discussion about the "woman question" as it relates to Ms. d'Aubigny's works. The second part of this project includes a new, modern performance edition of the collection of songs, complete with general editorial guidelines, notes and translations, and a critical report detailing all deviations from the original 1797 edition.

Perseverance in the Face of Totalitarianism: The Life and Legacy of Józef Zygmunt Szulc in Nazi Occupied France
The Reichsleiter Rosenberg Task Force of 1940, initiated a systematic confiscation of items belonging to Jews throughout Europe. Because of this task force and Hitler's decrees, Jews across Europe were labeled as stateless, and were stripped of ownership and rights to property. Not only did these actions devastate Jews economically, but intellectually and artistically as well. In parts of occupied France, this task force was legitimized by Vichy laws under the label of the Commissariat Générale aux Questions Juives (General Commission for Jewish Issues) and enabled Nazi officials to closely watch Jewish musicians and stop them from performing their music, profiting from anyone else performing it, and to halt any public performance of Jewish compositions. This dissertation exhibits the lost legacy of one such Jewish musician, Józef Szulc. It discusses him as a musician of great importance in the ongoing recovery of Jewish culture, music, and life during World War II. His musical output has historical notoriety, as seen through reviews and performance history. The study of Vichy laws and their effect on Jewish musicians in Paris during the Nazi occupation provides the socio-political context for Szulc's life.
