Troops strength in South Vietnam is reported to have dropped by more than 60 per cent from the high point reached a little more than two years ago. The U. S. command says a 2,300 man cutback last week reduced the American troop total to 216,700. The American presence has peaked at 543,400 men. The current withdrawl pace is ahead of President Nixon’s announced ceiling of 184,00 men to be reached by December first. The total is said likely to drop to as low as 173,000 by the end of November. Meanwhile the Saigon command says two terrorists attacks killed five Vietnamese civilians and wounded 30 others. The raids were reported in the Mekong Delta south of Saigon and a central coast province. London – British prime minister Heath is expected to ask the Irish Republic prime minister today to tighten security on the Republic’s side of a 260-mile border with Northern Ireland.
