Co-introduction of precipitate hardening and TRIP in a TWIP high-entropy alloy using friction stir alloying

Article exploring friction stir alloying (FSA) to tune the microstructure and a composition of a TWIP high-entropy alloy by adding Ti, and thus activating site-specific deformation mechanisms that occur concomitantly in a single alloy. This approach presents a novel microstructural architecture to design alloys, an approach that combines and optimizes local compositions such that multiple deformation mechanisms can be activated to enhance engineering properties.

First principles computation of composition dependent elastic constants of omega in titanium alloys: implications on mechanical behavior (open access)

First principles computation of composition dependent elastic constants of omega in titanium alloys: implications on mechanical behavior

Article on the poor mechanical properties of Ti alloys. The study shows that the elastic properties of the ω-phase can be systematically varied as a function of its composition to enhance both the ductility and strength of the Ti-alloy. Furthermore, that ω precipitates are not intrinsically embrittling and detrimental and that Ti-alloys can be created with both good ductility and strength by tailoring ω precipitates' composition instead of completely eliminating them.

Physical and optical properties of the International Simple Glass (open access)

Physical and optical properties of the International Simple Glass

This article presents physical property data (both published and previously unpublished) on a single batch of International Simple Glass (ISG), which was cast into individual ingots that were distributed to the collaborators. Properties from the atomic scale to the macroscale, including composition and elemental impurities, phase purity, density, thermal properties, mechanical properties, optical and vibrational properties, and the results of molecular dynamics simulations are presented, as well as information on the surface composition and morphology after polishing. Although the existing literature on the alteration of ISG is not extensively reviewed here, the results of well-controlled static alteration experiments are presented here as a point of reference for other performance investigations.

Insights into the mechanisms controlling the residual corrosion rate of borosilicate glasses (open access)

Insights into the mechanisms controlling the residual corrosion rate of borosilicate glasses

Article examining the glass durability and residual rate of borosilicate glass. The authors focus on the behavior of the soluble elements of the International Simple Glass (B, Na, and Ca) to show that the residual rate is controlled by the behavior of B, a glass former supposed to dissolve instantaneously when in contact with water and thus widely considered as an ideal tracer. The article demonstrates that B release is controlled by multiple processes highly dependent on the pH. A new paradigm, including B as a key element of the system, is proposed to develop a comprehensive model for the corrosion of borosilicate glass.

Can a simple topological-constraints-based model predict the initial dissolution rate of borosilicate and aluminosilicate glasses? (open access)

Can a simple topological-constraints-based model predict the initial dissolution rate of borosilicate and aluminosilicate glasses?

This article, as an alternative route to empirical models, shows that a structural descriptor based on the number of topological constraints per atom can be used to predict the initial dissolution rate of aluminosilicate and borosilicate glasses after being parameterized on different families of glasses (specific series of borosilicate glasses). Results show that, provided that corrections are made for high alkali content glasses that dissolve incongruently (preferential release of Na), the model gives reasonable predictions, even far from its training domain.

A modified random network model for P2O5–Na2O–Al2O3–SiO2 glass studied by molecular dynamics simulations

This article investigates the short- and medium-range structural features of sodium aluminosilicate glasses with various P₂O₅ (0–7 mol%) content and Al/Na ratios ranging from 0.667 to 2.000 by using molecular dynamics simulations. Based on the simulated structural information, a modified random network model for P₂O₅-bearing sodium aluminosilicate glass has been proposed, which could be useful to optimize the mobility of sodium ions and design novel functional glass compositions.
