Fabrication of wide-IF 200–300GHz superconductor–insulator–superconductor mixers with suspended metal beam leads formed on silicon-on-insulator

This article reports on a fabrication process that uses silicon-oninsulator (SOI) substrates and micromachining techniques to form wide-IF superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) mixer devices that have suspended metal beam leads for rf grounding. Aside from a description of the fabrication process, electrical measurements of these Nb/Al–AlNₓ /Nb trilayer devices will also be presented.

Biocompatible, large-format, inkjet printed heterostructure molybdenum disulfide-graphene photodetectors on conformable substrates (open access)

Biocompatible, large-format, inkjet printed heterostructure molybdenum disulfide-graphene photodetectors on conformable substrates

This article describes an inkjet printed, biocompatible, heterostructure photodetector that was constructed using inks of photo-active molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and electrically conducting graphene which facilitated charge collection of the photocarriers. The importance of such devices stems from their potential utility in age-related-macular degeneration, which is a condition where the photosensitive retinal tissue degrades with aging, eventually compromising vision. The absence of effective therapeutic remedies for patients with this disorder has motivated the development of such devices to restore some degree of visual function.

Effect of Thermal Treatment With Water, H₂So₄ and Naoh Aqueous Solution on Color, Cell Wall and Chemical Structure of Poplar Wood

This article describes a study to observe and quantify the changes of color on wood surface and microstructure of cell walls after the thermal treatment with water, dilute acid and alkali, and to describe the changes of chemical structure on wood surface after those pretreatments.

Hydrogen bonding interactions of H2O and SiOH on a boroaluminosilicate glass corroded in aqueous solution (open access)

Hydrogen bonding interactions of H2O and SiOH on a boroaluminosilicate glass corroded in aqueous solution

This article simulates hydrous species (H2O and Si-OH) on nano-porous alteration layers (gels) formed on a boroaluminosilicate glass called International Simple Glass corroded in aqueous solutions at pH 7 and pH 9, and initially saturated with soluble silicon-containing species were analyzed using linear and non-linear vibrational spectroscopy in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. The simulation and experimental results obtained in this study indicate that the water mobility in the gel formed at pH 9 could be slower than that in the gel formed at pH 7, and as a result, the leaching rate at pH 9 is slower than that at pH 7.

First principles computation of composition dependent elastic constants of omega in titanium alloys: implications on mechanical behavior (open access)

First principles computation of composition dependent elastic constants of omega in titanium alloys: implications on mechanical behavior

Article on the poor mechanical properties of Ti alloys. The study shows that the elastic properties of the ω-phase can be systematically varied as a function of its composition to enhance both the ductility and strength of the Ti-alloy. Furthermore, that ω precipitates are not intrinsically embrittling and detrimental and that Ti-alloys can be created with both good ductility and strength by tailoring ω precipitates' composition instead of completely eliminating them.
