Enhancing student-centered learning in Biomechanics (KINE3050) using new and emerging technological educational tools

Poster presented as part of the 2012 University Forum on Teaching & Learning at UNT. This poster describes a a project for a course using new and emerging technological educational tools. This project redesigned KINE-3050 (Biomechanics) as a blended course with the aim to enhance student-centered learning.

Exercise Capacity Following Four Hours of Head-Down Rest in Endurance-Exercise-Trained and Untrained Subjects

Peak oxygen uptake (VO2PEAK) in endurance exercise trained (ET =8) subjects (VO2PEAK = 61.7 1.6 ml 02.kg.min-1) was compared to the V02 PEAK of untrained (UT = 8) subjects (V02 PEAK = 38.4 1.7 ml 02 -kg.min1) after four hours of -6* head-down rest (HDR).Although both groups showed a reduction in blood volume (BV) following HDR, this decrement was greater for ET subjects (delta BV = -3.23 0.46 mi/kg; P <0.05). The ET subjects had a greater decrease in VO2=(delta 02E -5.58 1.05 ml 02-kg.min-1; P <0.05) than their UT peers (VO2PEAK = -2.44 0.79 ml02-kg.min-1). These data suggest that the greater reductions in VO2PE, observed for the ET group were associated with a greater BV loss resulting from 4 h of HDR prior to exercise.

Longitudinal Effects of Motivation and Physical Activity on Depressive Symptoms among College Students

This article is guided by Lubans et al.'s conceptual framework and examines the longitudinal relationships of physical activity (PA) motivation with leisure-time PA and depressive symptoms among college students over one academic year. The findings suggest sex-specified motivational intervention strategies and PA promotion programs/opportunities are needed to reduce depression symptoms among college students over time.

Utilizing Emerging Technologies to Enhance Students' Engagement and Learning

This poster discusses using clickers to improve students' classroom engagement and gauge students' understanding of the course materials during lecture classes, introducing emerging technologies to improve students' learning experiences, and introducing exergames such as Wii Sports and Wii Fit to promote students' motivation and engagement.

Social-Ecological Factors Predict College Students’ Physical Activities and Sedentary Behavior

Article investigates the predictive strengths of individual, social, and physical environmental factors toward different intensities of physical activity and sedentary behavior among college students. Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were performed to examine the associations and the relative contributions of those individual, social, and physical environmental factors to physical activity and sedentary behavior, respectively.
