Traffic generated emissions alter the lung microbiota by promoting the expansion of Proteobacteria in C57Bl/6 mice placed on a high-fat diet (open access)

Traffic generated emissions alter the lung microbiota by promoting the expansion of Proteobacteria in C57Bl/6 mice placed on a high-fat diet

Article investigating exposure to traffic-generated emissions and the potential to alter lung microbiota and immune defenses. Results show that the combined effects of ME and HF diet result in decreased immune surveillance and lung bacterial dysbiosis, which is of significance in lung diseases.

A cytoskeletal function for PBRM1 reading methylated microtubules (open access)

A cytoskeletal function for PBRM1 reading methylated microtubules

This article shows that that the coordinated read-write activity of the epigenetic machinery extends to the cytoskeleton, with PBRM1 in the PBAF chromatin remodeling complex reading microtubule methyl marks written by the SETD2 histone methyltransferase. This article opens a previously unknown window into how chromatin remodeler defects can drive disease via both epigenetic and cytoskeletal dysfunction.

Cellular Plasticity in Response to Suppression of Storage Proteins in the Brassica napus Embryo (open access)

Cellular Plasticity in Response to Suppression of Storage Proteins in the Brassica napus Embryo

Article testing the tradeoff between protein and oil storage in oilseed crops by analyzing the effect of suppressing key genes encoding protein storage products (napin and cruciferin). This study provides mechanistic insights into the intriguing link between lipid and protein storage, which have implications for biotechnological strategies directed at improving oilseed crops.

Exposure to diesel exhaust particulates and desert sand dust generates microvesicle particles and platelet-activating factor agonists (open access)

Exposure to diesel exhaust particulates and desert sand dust generates microvesicle particles and platelet-activating factor agonists

The authors address the editor in their article, stating that the majority of the general population, particularly, servicemen and women deployed across the globe are exposed to various airborne hazards, including diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) and desert sand dust (DSD). Studies, including the author's study, have shown that exposure to ROS-generating pro-oxidative stressors ranging from environmental carcinogens to pollutants, including cigarette smoke, produces a class of potent phospholipid mediators, Platelet-activating factor (PAF) and PAF-like agonists via oxidative cleavage of lipid membrane glycerophosphocholines (GPCs).
