Study on reduction of accessory horsepower requirements. Eighth quarterly progress report (open access)

Study on reduction of accessory horsepower requirements. Eighth quarterly progress report

This is the eighth quarterly technical progress report for a program in which the objective is to evolve and define an accessory drive system that will minimize system power consumption of driven accessories on an internal combustion engine in a passenger automobile. The initial program phases established concept feasibility, determined potential fuel savings, and selected a drive system design for concept mechanization. The current Phase IV carries the program through prototype fabrication and bench, engine, and vehicle tests. The final program objective is a detail drive system design and a demonstrated overall vehicle fuel savings potential. The major technical accomplishments during this reporting period were: the test vehicle was successfully driven to and from Ann Arbor, Michigan from Phoenix with the drive system installed; accessory drive hardware was calibrated, disassembled and reviewed for wear after round trip from Phoenix to Ann Arbor, Michigan; MADS governor performance was analyzed and parameters were varied to demonstrate flexibility available in modifying accessory drive input/output characteristics; and a task list that matched smaller, lower cost accessory components, with the accessory drive equipped vehicle, was prepared. Major emphasis during the remainder of the program will be in this area. (LCL)

Homogenization of arc-melted uranium-6 weight percent niobium alloy ingots (open access)

Homogenization of arc-melted uranium-6 weight percent niobium alloy ingots

Microsegregation and macrosegregation in uranium-6 niobium arc-melted ingots were characterized by electron microprobe analysis. Homogenization studies determined that microsegregation can be eliminated by heat treating the alloy for six hours at 1100/sup 0/C. Extensive homogenization did not eliminate macrosegregation (banding) from the as-cast alloy, but a mathematical model describing banding and coring indicated that banding could possibly be eliminated by working prior to homogenization.

Continuous Czochralski growth. Silicon sheet growth development of the large area silicon sheet task of the Low Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. First quarterly progress report, October--December 1977

The development of equipment and processes to produce single crystal solar silicon by a continuous Czochralski method was studied. ''Continuous'' is defined as the ability to produce 100 kilograms of crystal from only one melt container. The equipment to be used is a Hamco CG2000 Production Crystal Grower. Certain modifications will be made to the grower to enable periodic replenishment of silicon into the crucible and removal of grown crystals. The crystal grower was constructed and installed in a separate room designated and prepared for the project. It was adapted with a modified throat, a vacuum-tight isolation valve, an enlarged pull chamber to hold a supply of poly material, and a modified automatic diameter control (ADC) optical system. It was fully tested and made ready for trial runs. Designs are under way for other modifications to the equipment, including a recharge system, a polysilicon attachment device, and a modified bead-chain pull mechanism capable of pulling and simultaneously weighing a 30 to 40 Kg growing crystal. An economic model was developed for batch CZ as a base-line reference, and for two methods of continuous CZ. Preliminary analysis indicates a cost (value added by crystal growth) of approximately $13 to $17 per …

Test and Evaluation of Alco/BLH Prototype Sodium-Heated Steam Generator: Final Report (open access)

Test and Evaluation of Alco/BLH Prototype Sodium-Heated Steam Generator: Final Report

A 30-Mwt prototype sodium-to-sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a 30-Mwt prototype sodium-heated steam generator were tested in combined operation in its Sodium Components Test Installation. This report contains the results of test and evaluation of the steam generator. During plant performance tests, performance degradation was observed, which resulted in the initiation of a diagnostic test series. This test series revealed that under certain operating conditions, the thermohydraulic characteristic of the steam generator changed either suddenly or gradually, resulting in overall performance degradation. A structural failure, requiring retirement of the unit, occurred before the diagnostic test series and analytical support effort were completed. This report describes the thermohydraulic and structural performance, including the structural failures, and related evaluation analyses of the Alco/BLH prototype steam generator performed prior to termination of the test and evaluation program. In addition, the report presents a post-test examination plan to obtain data that could possibly explain the cause of performance anomalies and structural failures experienced during testing.

Validation of the kinetic model for predicting the composition of chlorinated water discharged from power plant cooling systems (open access)

Validation of the kinetic model for predicting the composition of chlorinated water discharged from power plant cooling systems

The purpose of this report is to present a validation of a previously described kinetic model which was developed to predict the composition of chlorinated fresh water discharged from power plant cooling systems. The model was programmed in two versions: as a stand-alone program and as a part of a unified transport model developed from consistent mathematical models to simulate the dispersion of heated water and radioisotopic and chemical effluents from power plant discharges. The results of testing the model using analytical data taken during operation of the once-through cooling system of the Quad Cities Nuclear Station are described. Calculations are also presented on the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station which uses cooling towers.
