[Six Texas & Pacific Trains head to the 1936 Rose Bowl]

Texas and Pacific Railway's six special trains, which carried football fans to the Rose Bowl game in Pasadena, California, which was played on January 1, 1936, await the hour of departure in the Dallas Union Terminal Station on Sunday afternoon, December 29, 1935. Train No. 1, christened the "Flagship" headed by Engine No. 905, a 900 Class Mountain type 4-8-2 locomotive, stands on the track at extreme right.

This design is "for utilizing a part of the magnetic field of the electro-magnet to act as a retarding medium or a brake to the carbon-holder, which consists of a system of gear-wheels provided with a ratchet and pawl . . . actuated from rack-teeth cut in the side of the upper-carbon rod, on the last spindle of which is adjustably secured a disk of soft iron or other magnetic material, so located as to be within the influence of the magnetic field of one end of the electro-magnet" (lines 36-47).

Cotton-Gin.

Patent for a cotton gin that removes lint-cotton from the saws using an air-suction mechanism instead of a brush, which pose a fire hazard and can impair the gin's effectiveness. An air-blast mechanism is also an ineffective method of cleaning lint-cotton from the saws. The air-suction mechanism sucks "the lint-cotton directly from the rear portions of the saw-teeth independently of and without a brush, and an apparatus for preventing the withdrawn lint-cotton from passing into and through the air-suction apparatus" (lines 84-89).
