The back of the photograph proclaims, “A part of the Buffalo herd in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, Lawton, Okla. This is the second largest herd of buffalo on the continent. The buffalo was the department store of the plains Indian, supplying them with practically all their needs. When the millions of buffalo that roamed the prairies were exterminated there were a few small herds saved and those have now grown to some 22,000 in North American game preserves.“

Flood Detention Structure on Washita River

Photograph of approximately 6" of rain fell above this site in the period of four days. On April 27th, 1954, 2" fell in twenty five miinutes, 3" fell in one hour on April 29 and 1" fell on April 30. Water rose approximately seven feet above the drow-down structure and had seven feet to go before it reached spillway level. Note the water being discharged out of the 24" drawdown structure in the grove of trees at the base of the dam. Aerial view.

Washita River Wildhorse Creek

Photograph of flood prevention. Watershed Treatment - Washita River - Wildhorse Creek. Farm pond under construction for livestock water and gully erositon control. A 10 inch pipe will be installed for flood water control and spillway protection. A waterway will be constructed below pond to carry water to Wildhorse Creek. It will carry water from 80 ac. field in upper left corner after vegetation is well established. Diversion in lower right will also spill into waterway. About 500 acres of good bottomland will be protected from silt and overflow by these practices. Note saw logs which have been removed from bottomland.

North Cavalary Creek Overflow

Photograph of Cavalary Creek overflowing. This is inbetween the Frank Kliewer and Elmer Flaming farms, 7 miles SE of Cordell, Okla. Overflow enters North Cavalry Creek after running down the road less tha 1/2 mile from where it leaves South Cavalry Creek. (See the Okla-10-783 and Okla-10-782 series). Flood waters are washing out the road and endangering the bridge. This picture is looking south.
