Surface topographies of two-year coupons of titanium grade 16 from long-term testing

Using an Atomic Force Microscope, we have examined the surface topographies associated with crevice coupons representing the six classes of coupons of Titanium Grade 16 removed from Long-Term Corrosion testing after two years of immersion. Only on coupons removed from Simulated Concentrated Well Water do we observe features which are likely to represent embryonic pit formation. The coupons removed from the Simulated Acidified Well Water were too rough to yield representative measurements.

Wetland Treatment of Oil and Gas Well Wastewaters. Quarterly Technical Report, August 25, 1993--November 24, 1993

This report presents results from studies of the uptake of Cu(II) and phenol by laboratory-type wetlands. The uptake of Cu(II) follows a tri-phasic behavior. The addition of peat was observed to have only a minimal effect on Cu(II) uptake. On the other hand, phenol sorption was favorably modified by addition of peat.

DOE standard guidelines for use of probabilistic seismic hazard curves at Department of Energy sites

This Standard is intended to provide guidance in the use of the seismic hazard curves developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Experience to-date has shown that application of these methodologies can yield significantly different results. In response to this issue, a Seismic Working Group (SWG) has been formed at the Department of Energy (DOE) Headquarters to coordinate the application of these methodologies within DOE in a consistent manner. The position developed by the SWG and contained in this Standard is intended for immediate use in developing seismic hazard estimates at DOE sites for the evaluation of new and existing, nuclear and non-nuclear DOE facilities. This Standard is needed not only to address the LLNL/EPRI issue but also to assure that state-of-the-art seismic hazard methods are incorporated into DOE standards as soon as possible. The DOE is currently involved in a joint program with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and EPRI to evaluate these existing probabilistic seismic hazard methodologies and to develop recommendations for an improved methodology for the 1990`s. The final product of this effort is expected to result in more stable hazard estimates and will supersede this Standard in approximately two …

Demonstration testing and evaluation of in situ soil heating. Health and safety plan (Revision 2)

This document is the Health and Safety Plan (HASP) for the demonstration of IITRI`s EM Treatment Technology. In this process, soil is heated in situ by means of electrical energy for the removal of hazardous organic contaminants. This process will be demonstrated on a small plot of contaminated soil located in the Pit Area of Classified Burial Ground K-1070-D, K-25 Site, Oak Ridge, TN. The purpose of the demonstration is to remove organic contaminants present in the soil by heating to a temperature range of 85{degrees} to 95{degrees}C. The soil will be heated in situ by applying 60-Hz AC power to an array of electrodes placed in boreholes drilled through the soil. In this section a brief description of the process is given along with a description of the site and a listing of the contaminants found in the area.

Use of Cloud Observations and Mesoscale Meteorology Models to Evaluate and Improve Cloud Parameterizations. Technical Progress Report, 1 October 1993--30 December 1994

The main goal of this research effort is to improve methods for calculating cloud cover within climate models. Until now, cloud cover and heights have been diagnosed from the US Air Force RTNEPH and 3DNEPH archive, and recently, CART measurements are available for analysis. Improved cloud cover formulations have been compared with existing climate model algorithms. The authors earlier conclusions were that relative humidity and convective potential were the strongest factors influencing cloud cover on regional scales. Therefore, they are refining and validating an innovative Single Column Model (SCM) cumulus parameterization for calculating heating and moistening tendencies, and precipitation rates attributable to subgrid-scale convection not resolved by climate models. This SCM will be tested and evaluated using tropical convective measurements (GATE) and they will also be applied to the incoming measurements from the Oklahoma ARM site. Further development and testing of this SCM will improve their ability to predict convective effects and cloud cover in climate models. They will quantify the influence of convection on cloud cover using convective measures derived from this SCM. Preliminary flowsheet: Ion exchange for separation of cesium from Hanford tank waste using resorcinol-formaldehyde resin

This preliminary flowsheet document describes an ion exchange process which uses resorcinol-formaldehyde (R-F) resin to remove cesium from Hanford tank waste. The flowsheet describes one possible equipment configuration, and contains mass balances based on that configuration with feeds of Neutralized Current Acid Waste, and Double Shell Slurry Feed. The flowsheet also discusses process alternatives, unresolved issues, and development needs associated with the ion exchange process. It is expected that this flowsheet will evolve as open issues are resolved and progress is made on development needs. The Office of Integrated Analysis and Forecasting (OIAF) is required to provide complete model documentation to meet the EIA Model Acceptance Standards. The EIA Model Documentation: Petroleum Market Model of the National Energy Modeling System provides a complete description of the Petroleum Market Model`s (PMM) methodology, and relation to other modules in the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS). This Model Developer`s Report (MDR) serves as an appendix to the methodology documentation and provides an assessment of the sensitivity of PMM results to changes in input data. The MDR analysis for PMM is performed by varying several sets of input variables one-at-a-time and examining the effect on a set of selected output variables. The analysis is based on stand-alone, rather than integrated, National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) runs. This means that other NEMS modules are not responding to PMM outputs. The PMM models petroleum refining and marketing. The purpose of the PMM is to project petroleum product prices, refining activities, and movements of petroleum into the United States and among domestic regions. The 4 inch water supply line to the foam system is being rerouted from the 6 inch raw water line in the Pipe Gallery to the 10 inch raw water main in the Operating Gallery. This document states the acceptance criteria for the flushing and testing which was performed by the contractor, and contains the completed data sheets for the tests. Four tests were performed and documented: operation of the supervisory position indicator; hydrostatic testing; leak check the system; and final system flush.

The occasion of this conference, the Sixth International Conference on Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, falls sixteen years after the remarkable triple simultaneous discovery of this powerful isotopic measurement. In the interval since the Fifth Conference in Paris in 1991, new facilities of both large and small size have become fully operational, achieving impressive gains in both measurement throughput and precision. The purpose of this short review is to extrapolate from recent gains and experience and to project the status of the field beyond the coming millennial date. AMS achieved instant application in archaeology and the geosciences and its early growth was stimulated by the excitement caused by the early results. The ability to obtain an accurate radiocarbon date with a sample one thousand times smaller than possible with scintillation or gas counting, the ability to trace {sup 14}CO{sub 2} in sea water with a similar thousand fold shrinkage in sample size, and the wide utility of {sup 10}Be, {sup 26}Al, {sup 36}Cl, and {sup 129}I as tracers and chronometers of erosion, hydrology and paleoclimate were sufficient to drive the partial conversion of existing accelerators and the construction of new dedicated ones. (Radiological assessments of radionuclide releases)

As a consequence of the Chernobyl accident, data have been obtained throughout the Northern Hemisphere on the concentrations of radionuclides in air, vegetation, soil, water, and foodstuffs that could be important means of human exposure. At the IAEA's invitation, the traveler reviewed recently published data and handbook summaries. The traveler evaluated the need for revising the default values recommended in Chapter 5, Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Chain Transport,'' of IAEA Safety Series No. 57. All attempts at revision were made to keep the mathematical complexity of the models to a minimum without substantial underestimation of dose to critical population subgroups. The traveler also served as chairman of the Multiple Pathways Working Group of the Coordinated Research Program on VAMP. This group has been established to test predictions of models assessing multiple exposure pathways potentially leading to human exposure to {sup 137}Cs. Testing is carried out for major components of assessment models that predict deposition, environmental transport, food chain bioaccumulation, and subsequent uptake and retention in the human body and dose due to exposure to external gamma radiation.

Somatic cell genotoxicity at the glycophorin A locus in humans

We have developed an assay for detecting variant erythrocytes that occur as a result of in vivo allele loss at the glycophorin A (GPA) locus on chromosome 4 in humans. This gene codes for an erythroid- specific cell surface glycoprotein, and with our assay we are able to detect rare variant erythrocytes that have lost expression of one of the two GPA alleles. Two distinctly different variant cell types are detected with this assay. One variant cell type (called N{O}) is hemizygous. Our assay also detects homozygous variant erythrocytes that have lost expression of the GPA(M) allele and express the GPA(N) allele at twice the heterozygous level. The results of this assay are an enumeration of the frequency of N{O} and NN variant cell types for each individual analyzed. These variant cell frequencies provide a measure of the amount of somatic cell genotoxicity that has occurred at the GPA locus. Such genotoxicity could be the result of (1) reactions of toxic chemicals to which the individual has been exposed, or (2) high energy radiation effects on erythroid precursor cells, or (3) errors in DNA replication or repair in these cells of the bone marrow.
