Stokus and Soil Conservation Service technicians at Madill, Oklahoma for Marshall County Soil and Conservation District supervisors. An old Oliver 2-row lister planter was used. Planter parts and listers removed and replaced with 2 shovel plows. Foot piece of plows jointed and will trip if rock is struck. Hopper built of a 1” x 12” board is mounted on [unclear] from horses attached to the plow front. [remainder of text very faded and crossed out].

Photograph of Post Oak and Blackjack control on shallow savannah site, fair range condition class, prior to first treatment in 1956. First treatment consisted of 2 pounds of 2-4-5T herbicide per acre and was applied on June 1, 1956. Second treatment was 1 pound of 2-4-5T per acre applied on July 1, 1957. This pasture was completely rested during the growing season in 1956 and 1957 and has now improved to good range condition class. OK-874-7.

The soil was left bare and completely free of protective cover for several years allowing severe erosion to occur. The area will be fenced, tilled, mulched and seeded to tall wheatgrass and other salt tolerant grasses to attempt re-vegetation. OK-4081-9.

Photograph of hardwood control. Quintas Herron, owner, and C. P. Durk [?], Soil Conservation Service, examine pine trees released by deadening culled hardwood trees with a basal injection of 2-4-5T herbicide in December, 1954. Planting an acre of pine seedlings costs about $8.00 per acre where controlling hardwoods to release young pine costs about $4.00 per acre. Natural reproduction of pine produces more trees per acre to be cut as poles, posts and pulpwood than plantings. OK-414-3.

Photograph of concrete flumes carrying irrigation water over a drainage ditch. Two drainage ditches come together on the other side of the flume. The drainage ditch empties into the Bayou Pointe aux Loups which flows into the Bayou des Cannes [French: “Creek of the Reeds”] from which comes the irrigation water in this canal. Photograph of an automatic Bermudagrass sprigging machine (one row 3 point hookup) planting Bermudagrass on outside spillway cut. Sodding equipmant must be anchored to the truck or tractor on top cut or dam. One of the problems connected with this operation is getting grass planted at sufficent depth to prevent loss of roots from excessive drying. Anchor cable length is adjusted for each trip. Work being done under contract.

Watering After Sodding
Photograph of water being applied after sodding. Furrows were left to hold water. Water is being supplied by an irrigation pump and a 2-inch fire hose. A half inch of water applied following sodding assures a better stand, especially during periods of high wind. A sprinkler irrigation system can also be used effectively.

Gully to be Shaped
Photograph of a gully to be shaped. K.E. Riley, SCS Technician in gully showing comparative depth. Top soil will be stock piled on a small area to allow for shaping of gully. Once a section is shaped, top soil from an adjoining section is used to cover area shaped and at the same time uncovering another section to be shaped. After shaping is completed area will be fertilized and sodded to bermuda grass.
