Stebbens' Farm Photograph/Muskogee Project

Photograph of Roger Stebbens' farm taken from Stebbens Mountain during a Soil Conservation Service field day tour. The photograph shows Stebbens' farm, cattle grazing on contour ridged pasture, and a large farm pond. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Taken from the top of Stebbens mountain from the place at which the members of the Muskogee field day tour were given lunch and talks on soil conservation work. The picture shows the farm of Roger Stebbens which is under contract with the Soil Conservation Service. Visible in this picture is a herd of white-face cattle grazing on a contour ridged pasture near a farm pond. This herd, pasture and the pond were within full view of the crowd attending the field tour while eating lunch at noon and while listening to the addresses after lunch."

The day before this picture was taken [taken on 1/28/1944}, 17 hogs, 1 horse, 24 grown cattle, 1 Brahma bull, and 10 calves were put out to graze and were still grazing by March 7, 1944. Top wall eaten off. Sweet clover was planted on different dates and fields are pastured by use of electric fences to graze in rotation. TX-41, 435.

This improved pasture of White Dutch, Persian, hop clover & Bermuda and Dallas grass is part of the coordinated soil conservation program that also includes crop residue management, drainage & fertilization. Planted 2 years ago, 65 acres of improved pastures are fertilized each year with 300 pounds of 20 percent phosphate per acre. After 3 years, pastures will be planted to rice for 2 years.
