The Extraction Method of Purification of Uranyl Nitrate (open access)

The Extraction Method of Purification of Uranyl Nitrate

Technical report. Three extractions of a diethyl ether solution of uranyl nitrate with small portions of water are effective in removing rare earths, as is shown by radio-gadolinium and radio-europium tracer experiments. A study of representative ethers, alcohols, ketones, and esters showed that diethyl ether and a mixture of 85% ethyl methyl ketone with 15% xylene are the best solvents for the extraction.

The Heavy-Water Homogeneous Pile: a Review of Chemical Researches and Problems

Technical Report: A generalized review of the chemical problems and researches related principally to the heavy water homogeneous pile is presented herewith. The report covers researches performed principally by the Columbia Group who initiated the study. This report contains a chronological outline of the development, a discussion of some special topics whose significance is paramount in any slurry pile discussion, and finally an outline of important research problems remaining, roughly graded in order of their importance. No attempt has been made to be either complete or detailed in the discussion. The emphasis has been principally on furnishing a broad guide to those who may t some future date take up this work.

Preparation of Carrier Free Zr-Cb Tracer, Problem Assignment No. 263-X61C, Progress Report

Technical report abstract. A rapid procedure for the preparation of very pure carrier-free Zr and Nb tracer involves the chloroform extraction of the cupferrides of Zr and Nb activities from process solutions. Zr and Nb form very stable chloroform soluble cupferrides in acid solutions (CK-993) and are separated from other fission elements almost quantitatively to yield pure mixture of Zr and Nb activity. A minimum of operations is required and the method is easily adaptable to remote control.

Freezing Point Diagram and Liquid-Liquid Solubilities of the System Uranium Hexafluoride-Hydrogen Fluoride

Abstract: "The complete freezing point diagram for the system uranium hexafluoride-hydrogen fluoride has been determined. In addition, liquid-liquid solubilities of these compounds have been measured up to the consolute temperature of 101 C. A miscibility gap starts at 61.2 C. over the compositions range 10 to 80 mole per cent uranium hexafluoride. The lowest melting point of this binary system under its own pressure, i.e. the eutectic, is -85 C."

Critical Ionization of Potentials of Uranium Hexafluoride (open access)

Critical Ionization of Potentials of Uranium Hexafluoride

Introduction: "The extensive use of uranium hexafluoride in the Nier-type mass spectrometers, where the ionization is produced by slow electrons, made a knowledge of the ionization potentials of the various ions desirable. This information was not available and work was accordingly begun to secure such data. The first measurement was made with a VGIA ion gauge and has been described in TEO report CD-310. With this apparatus it was not possible to identify the ionization products and it was presumed that the value reported was for the UF5 ion. When time and equipment became available, the work was continued and the critical potentials of the singly-charged ions determined."

K [infinity] in Uranium - Water Lattices

This report follows experiments on K[infinity], measuring the element for several red sizes, enrichments, and water-to-uranium volume ratios-(1, 2), by making use of the relation k[infinity] = 0M-[2]B-[2] (M-2 = migration area, B = buckling). The purpose of this report is to compare the experimental data for k[infinity] with values calculated from the four-factor formula k[infinity] = [eta][epsilon]pf.

The Chlorination of TO₃

Abstract: The applicability of specific mixtures and organic chlorocarbons in general toward the chlorination of TO₃ has been tested by means of reactions is sealed glass tubes. The results show that thionyl chloride mixed with tetrachloroethylene or a bromothane of the tyoe CHBrC12 will produce TCI4 directly. This same result is produced by CBr2C12 alone.

A Theory of Hyperfragments (open access)

A Theory of Hyperfragments

"Mesic decay of hyperfragments is discussed systematically on the basis of a previous model for hyperfragments. The general formalism for the two-body and three-body mesic decay was developed. The polarization-direction correlation and the angular correlation for the two-body and the three-body decays are discussed together with the decay probability. The formalism was developed so as to include the isotopic spin selection rule ( DELTA I = 1/2 and 3/2) for the mesic decays. The theory was applied especially for the low mass number hypergragments where it was found that the branching ratios of the two-body and the three-body mesic decays of /sup 3/H/sub i and /sup 4/H/sub i, (/sup 3/ H/sub i yields /sup 3/He + i/sup -/)/(/sup 3/H/sub i yields D + p+ pi /sup -/) and (/sup 4/H/sub i yields /sup 4/He + pi /sup -/)/(/sup 4/H/ sub i yields /sup 3/H + p + pi /sup -/), could be used for the determination of the spins of both hyperfragments. The fraction of the p-wave decay rate for the free LAMBDA decay obtained from the reaction /sup 5/He/sub i yields /sup 4/He + p + pi where the decay proceeds through two-resonant states (p/sub 3/2/ and p/sub 1/2/) …

Aerosol Collection by Wetted Fiberglass Media

A wet collection system for aerosols has been developed using fibrous media. Tests show the performance to be in accord with recently developed theory of collection by fibrous media. The effects of varying aerosol particle size, particle density, and gas velocity have indicated that inertial impaction is the primary collection mechanism. Three-year operating experience on several full scale plant installations shows reliable performance.

On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows (open access)

On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows

An approximate Boltzmann equation, known as the single relaxation model is studied here. This equation is linearized and the fundamental solution is considered. Following N. Grad, the solution, asymptotic in small values of the ratio of mean-free-path to distance from the origin, is sought. It can be shown that the fundamental solution itself gives the asymptotic description of the flow field past an object. This solution gives the asymptotic description when the distance from the origin is much greater than either the mean-free-path or the body size. This is true independently of the Knudsen number.
