Advanced Photon Source Activity Report 2003: Report of Work Conducted at the APS, January 2003-December 2003, Synchrotron x-ray diffraction at the APS, Sector 16 (HPCAT)

We present here the summary of the results of our studies using the APS synchrotron beamline IDB Sector 16 (HPCAT). Optical calibration of pressure sensors for high pressures and temperatures: The high-pressure ruby scale for static measurements is well established to at least 100 GPa (about 5% accuracy), however common use of this and other pressure scales at high temperature is clearly based upon unconfirmed assumptions. Namely that high temperature does not affect observed room temperature pressure derivatives. The establishment of a rigorous pressure scale along with the identification of appropriate pressure gauges (i.e. stable in the high P-T environment and easy to use) is important for securing the absolute accuracy of fundamental experimental science where results guide the development of our understanding of planetary sciences, geophysics, chemistry at extreme conditions, etc. X-ray diffraction in formic acid under high pressure: Formic acid (HCOOH) is common in the solar system; it is a potential component of the Galilean satellites. Despite this, formic acid has not been well-studied at high temperatures and pressures. A phase diagram of formic acid at planetary interior pressures and temperatures will add to the understanding of planetary formation and the potential for life on Europa. Formic acid …

Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy of Pu Alloys (open access)

Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy of Pu Alloys

The characterization of microstructural changes in Pu-Ga alloys resulting from storage and aging phenomena is an important technical challenge to the nuclear Stockpile Stewardship program. We have identified at least two age-related phenomena that may occur in Pu alloys, dimensional changes due to the initial transient, helium accumulation, and void swelling, and phase instability. The initial transient is a well-known effect that results from the initial cascade damage. This form of dimensional change tends to saturate within approximately two years. A second contributor to dimensional change is the build-up of helium as a result of the alpha decay. Helium is generated at a rate of approximately 40 parts per million per year. Positron annihilation results by Howell indicate that the helium atoms will quickly fill a nearby vacancy and diffuse through the lattice as a helium filled vacancy. Void swelling is potentially the most severe mechanism of dimensional change in Pu alloys. It has been observed in all-materials exposed to irradiation, but has yet to be seen in naturally aged Pu. Phase instability is a potential concern due to the fact that the {delta}-phase is thermodynamically metastable at room temperature. Timofeeva has shown that the {delta}-phase will decompose to {delta}-phase …

Advanced Waveform Simulation for Seismic Monitoring Events (open access)

Advanced Waveform Simulation for Seismic Monitoring Events

Abstract We conduct a detailed test of a recently developed technique, CAPloc, in recovering source parameters from a few stations against results from a large broadband network in Southern California. The method uses a library of 1D Green’s functions which are broken into segments and matched to waveform observations with adjustable timing shifts. These shifts can be established by calibration against a distribution of well-located earthquakes and assembled in tomographic images for predicting various phase-delays. Synthetics generated from 2D cross-sections through these models indicates that 1D synthetic waveforms are sufficient in modeling but simply shifted in time for most hard-rock sites. This simplification allows the source inversion for both mechanism and location to easily obtain by grid search. We test one-station mechanisms for 160 events against the array for both PAS and GSC which have data since 1960. While individual solutions work well (about 90%), joint solutions produce more reliable and defensible results. Inverting for both mechanism and location also works well except for certain complex paths across deep basins and along mountain ridges.
