Survey of Materials for Supercritical-Water Reactor (open access)

Survey of Materials for Supercritical-Water Reactor

Survey of properties of materials which might be suitable for use in various locations in a supercritical-water reactor. Properties examined include tensile strength, rupture strength, endurance strength, Young's modulus, tensile elongation, coefficient of thermal expansion, coefficient of thermal conductivity, density, nominal composition, usual heat treatments and thermal-neutron-absorption cross sections.

A Method for the Analysis of Radionuclide Mixture Using a Gamma-Beta Scintillation Spectrometer (open access)

A Method for the Analysis of Radionuclide Mixture Using a Gamma-Beta Scintillation Spectrometer

The following report describes a beta and gamma scintillation detector similar to what was used in previous decay studies, yet was modified to make it suitable for the analysis of mixtures of radio-nuclides.

An Improved Continuous Ether Extractor for the Determination of Uranium in Dissolver Solutions (open access)

An Improved Continuous Ether Extractor for the Determination of Uranium in Dissolver Solutions

An improved continuous ether extractor is described. The modifications include a means of safely disposing of the active raffinate and a means of positivity checking the raffinate for completeness of uranium extraction. The results obtained on synthetic samples and on dissolver solutions are given. This work was undertaken because of a need for the determination of uranium in dissolver solutions with an accuracy of 0.1 per cent. After a review of available methods it was decided that a gravimetric determination would meet the requirements of precision and accuracy.

Outgassing Tests of Uranium Slugs (open access)

Outgassing Tests of Uranium Slugs

During the canning of slugs for Production Test 313-105-3-M, a high number of rejects were caused by gas voids in the A1-S1 bonding layer. Since the heat treatment of the slugs in a molten salt bath resulted in a chemically altered surface, an investigation was made to determine the volume of gas evolved from salt-bath heat-treated slugs as compared to other types of slugs. This test was designed as a preliminary test to determine if there were a significant differences.

Preliminary Studies of the Adsorption of Uranium in a Resin-In-Pulp System (open access)

Preliminary Studies of the Adsorption of Uranium in a Resin-In-Pulp System

Data were obtained in non-flowing and flowing (continuous) batch adsorption systems to serve as a guide to the operating conditions that should be used in a resin-in-pulp adsorption system for the recovery of uranium from ores.
