Comparison of Experimental and Theoretical Zero-Lift Wave-Drag Results for Various Wing-Body-Tail Combinations at Mach Numbers Up to 1.9

"Comparisons are made of experimental and theoretical zero-lift wave drag for several nose shapes, wing-body combinations, and models of current airplanes at Mach numbers up to 1.0. The experimental data were obtained from tests in the Ames 6- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel and at the NACA Wallops Island facility. The theoretical drag was found by use of linear theory utilizing model area distributions" (p. 1).

Comparison and Evaluation of Two Model Techniques Used in Predicting Bomb-Release Motions

"For the purpose of calculating bomb trajectories, forces and moments have been measured on bombs of three fineness ratios in the presence of a swept-wing fighter-bomber configuration at a Mach number of 1.61. Trajectories thus obtained have been compared with those from dynamic model tests and an analysis has been made to determine the source of errors and to suggest improvements in both techniques."

Investigation of combustion in 16-inch ram jet under simulated conditions of high altitude and high Mach number (open access)

Investigation of combustion in 16-inch ram jet under simulated conditions of high altitude and high Mach number

Results obtained with three different burner configurations in a connected-pipe investigation of a 16-inch ram jet are presented. The radial position of the fuel injector and the engine-outlet area both affected burner performance. For a given configuration, only slight changes in total-pressure ratio across the combustion chamber were obtained over the complete range of operation. With one burner, combustion efficiencies obtained at a combustion-chamber-inlet static pressure of 800 pounds per square foot absolute were greater than those obtained at 1920 pounds per square foot absolute.

Preliminary Investigation of the Combustion of Pentaborane and Diborane in a Turbojet Combustor at Simulated Altitude Conditions

Report presenting an investigation to determine the combustion characteristics of pentaborane and diborane in a turbojet combustor. Four different test conditions were explored, which varied in inlet total pressure, temperature, and simulated flight conditions. Results regarding the combustor itself and performance of diborane fuel at high altitude are provided.

Statistical Approach to the Estimation of Loads and Pressures on Seaplane Hulls for Routine Operations

Memorandum presenting a study of the impact loads experienced during full-scale and model tests in order to estimate the repeated loadings of seaplanes for long operating periods. The results indicate that the low landing speeds for antisubmarine-warafare seaplanes reduced the magnitude of the loads but that the more frequent landings and take-offs required for these operations greatly increased the total number of loads.

Experimental investigation of ejector-nozzle metal temperatures (open access)

Experimental investigation of ejector-nozzle metal temperatures

Metal temperatures were obtained on a full-scale ejector nozzle installed on an afterburner operating at exhaust-gas temperatures up to 3450 degrees R. A favorable afterburner-outlet temperature profile helped keep the primary-jet nozzle components cool. The ejector shroud temperatures were much more sensitive to secondary airflow than were temperatures on the primary-jet nozzle.

Comparison of Combustion Reactivity of Ethyldecaborane Fuels With Typical Hydrocarbon Fuels on Basis of Spray Flammability Limits of Fuel-Rich Mists and Calculated Lean-Limit Flame Temperatures for Fuel Vapor-Air Systems

From Summary: "The spray flammability limits of various high-energy fuels and hydrocarbon fuels were determined experimentally in an apparatus which measured the minimum percent of oxygen by volume that would permit the ignition of a particular fuel. The fluids investigated were ethyldecaboranes, aliphatic hydrocarbons, olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons, and esters."

Experimental Hinge Moments on Two Freely Oscillating Trailing-Edge Controls Hinged at 55 Percent Control Chord

Memorandum presenting oscillatory hinge-moment characteristics obtained from free-flight tests of two rocket-powered models. Results indicate that the hinge-line location of 55 percent control chord did not prevent unstable control aerodynamic damping. The damping appeared to be more stabilizing as the amplitude of oscillation was increased.

Supplementary Investigation in the Langley 20-Foot Free-Spinning Tunnel of a 1/20-Scale Model of the Douglas F4D-1 Airplane With External Wing Fuel Tanks: TED No. NACA AD 3116

Memorandum presenting an investigation in the 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a scale model to determine the spin and recovery characteristics of the Douglas F4D-1 airplane with external wing fuel tanks installed. The results indicated that any fully developed erect spin obtained on the airplane with tanks installed will be satisfactorily terminated by rudder reversal accompanied by moving the ailerons to full with the spin.

Preliminary Measurements of Atmospheric Turbulence at High Altitude as Determined From Acceleration Measurements on Lockheed U-2 Airplane

"An analysis of a sample of turbulence data obtained from VGH records taken on Lockheed U-2 airplanes during research flight up to 55,000 feet over England and Western Europe has indicated substantial reductions in the number and intensity of gusts with increasing altitude. These results on the variation of atmospheric turbulence over England and Western Europe were found to be in overall agreement with previous turbulence data obtained from airplane- and balloon-borne instruments over the United States" (p. 1).

Some characteristics of roll controls having possible application to fin-stabilized ammunition

Report presenting a discussion of the rolling effectiveness of deflected fins, flaps, spoilers, and jet devices that can be used on fin-stabilized ammunition. The possible applications and some of the significant factors affecting the performance of each device are described. The selection of one control over another appears to be mostly designer's choice with some exceptions depending on the roll requirements in a given situation.
