Aerial Radiometric and Magnetic Survey, Tonopah National Topographic Map, Nevada: Volume 1
Abstract: The results of analyses of the airborne gamma radiation and total magnetic field survey flown for the region identified as the Tonopah National Topographic Map NJll-5 is presented in Volume I and II of this report. The airborne data gathered is reduced by ground computer facilities to yield profile plots of the basic uranium, thorium and potassium equivalent gamma radiation intensities, ratios of these intensities, aircraft altitude above the earth's surface, total gamma ray and earth's magnetic field intensity, correlated as a function of geologic units. The distribution of data within each geologic unit, for all surveyed map lines and tie lines, has been calculated and is included. Two sets of profiled data for each line are included with one set displaying the above-cited data. The second set includes only flight line magnetic field, temperature, pressure, altitude data plus magnetic field data as measured at a base station. A general description of the area, including descriptions of the various geologic units and the corresponding airborne data, is included also.

The Preparation and Properties of Distilled Yttrium
From abstract: "Distillation procedures used for purifying yttrium metal, producing metal containing less than 150 ppm oxygen and lower concentrations of most of the other common impurities, are discussed. Some of the physical and mechanical properties of the distilled yttrium indicate: (1) a melting point of 1510°C, (2) a solid state transformation at 1459°C obtained from high temperature resistivity data, (3) a Rockwell H hardness of 60 and (4) improved rolling and swagging characteristics."

Thorium-Molybdenum Phase Diagram
From abstract: "The phase diagram of the thorium-molybdenum alloy system has been determined to be the eutectic type with a eutectoid reaction associated with the thorium alpha-beta transformation. X-ray, thermal, electrical resistance and metallographic methods have established the eutectic point at 1380 ± 10°C and 7.0 ± 0.5 wt % molybdenum. A eutectoid reaction is proposed at 1358 ± 5°C and less than 0.1 wt % molybdenum. No solubility of thorium in molybdenum was detected at 1325°C."

Respiratory Protective Equipment, Progress Report for June 1959 to April 1960
"Dust and gas masks and respirators have been an effective method under certain environmental conditions to reduce the inhalation of toxic aerosols. Under many conditions, however, their efficacy has been seriously questioned. It is the purpose of this study to evaluation over-all respirator performance on fine aerosols and to develop equipment whereby a greater degree of respiratory protection may be assured with reliability for highly toxic atmospheres."

Effect of Superheat and Moisture Separation on the SM-2 Design
From abstract: "The study evaluates the utilization of superheat and moisture separation techniques in the SM-2 design to improve the steam plant reliability and thermal efficiency. Ease of packaging, steam plant transient response, and capital costs are also considered. The reference design used for comparison is the steam cycle employing saturated steam at 600 psia described in APAE No. 40, Volume II."

Abstract: This technical report contains a description of the nuclear analysis performed upon the SM-2 core and vessel for the period September 1, 1958 to December 31, 1959. Calculations are given for core reactivity, power distributions, lifetime, reactor control, kinetics, radiation problems, fuel and poison burn-ups, and the nuclear effects of poisons, temperature, and geometry. Wherever possible, experimental data is included in order to test the validity of the analytical models. The SM-2 nuclear analysis was performed by Alco Products, in. under Tasks 1, 8, and 10 of Contract No. AT(30-2)-326 for the Atomic Energy Commission.

Thermal Distortion of SAR Hafnium Control Rod
Abstract: The thermal distortion of a Y-shaped hafnium control rod heated by arrays of individually controlled radiation heaters was studied. The large axial and radial temperature gradients specified for this control rod were easily obtained with the radiation-heating method. The distortion, as measured with dial indicators, amounted to a 2-mil movement of the free end of the rod in the direction of the coolest blade.

A Transistorized Binary Counter for Extreme Environments
A transistorized binary counter circuit is described that operates over a temperature range of -65 degree F to +165 degree F. the supply voltage is 28 + 4 volts and the maximum trigger repetition rate is 5 kilocycles. the binary circuit is pre-settable and resettable by means of a switching arrangement that can be mechanized. Texas Instrument type 904 silicon transistors whose large signal current gain is 2.8 or greater at a -65 degree F can be used in this circuit.
